Hi folks, I have a local pihole server in my home, and another separate server running a bunch of services - Immich, Paperless, Jellyfin, etc...

Right now, I usually access that second server via its IP address, which works, but I'm wondering if there's some way to register a sort of local domain name, like "server.home", via Pihole and so be able to type that into a browser on my phone, my various PCs, and reach the server that way. Pihole is the DNS server for all my home devices already.

Is that built into Pihole somehow or is there some way to configure that?

I've searched online, found a bunch of pages which seemed like what I need but none have gotten me there yet. Please note: I'm not very skilled with networking. Thanks for any tips.

So I reinstalled everything and the latest pihole just came with one adlist, about 250K entries.

I mostly just want to make sure we're blocking adware and trackers but malware, crypto nonsense, etc... would be good too.

Thanks for suggestions.

Hi, so I just realized my many year old Pihole instance is at v5.10 and its running on Raspbian 'Stretch' v9.4. Pihole won't update because the OS no longer has active repos.

Is there an easy way to upgrade the OS now? Or, if I have to wipe it and rebuild from scratch, is there a way to backup all my Pihole settings and then restore them later?

Thanks!

my Pihole dashboard shows 1 IP address. the raspberry pi is showing a 2nd IP address. My Fios gateway is showing both as separate devices, 1 as raspberrypi another device as new-host-1. both devices are showing the same MAC address. what did I do to mess this up?

I got tired of seeing clickbaity thumbnails and wondered if I would be happier without them at all. I added ytimg.com to my blacklist as a wildcard about a month ago and I've found that I use the website more deliberately than before. And it works on the YouTube app for Android and my smart TV!

If you don't want to block it for every device on the network you can add it to the Group Management lists as well.

This web page is the current 'default landing point' for new users interested in getting started with using Pi-hole on their home network.

Note that it appears the latest versions have substantially reduced the ability to configure the project from a CLI, and now force use of the web GUI in order to utilize anything other than the default blocklist.
