BEIJING - China has mediated peace talks between Myanmar’s ruling military and rebel groups, and the parties agreed on a temporary ceasefire and to maintain dialogue, Beijing said on Thursday.

Extinct for more than 30 years, the People’s Liberation Army has been resurrected – including in the country’s deep south, where the troops have focused more on building alliances and their military capabilities than spreading their ideology.

Greenway Mining Group operates two mines in Shan State, Myanmar. Since the coup attempt, it has been seeking approval from the junta to expand one of its mines and has organised the shipment of minerals to China, in partnership with ME 1.

The company, which is incorporated in the Cayman Islands and also operates in the British Virgin Islands, has earned millions of dollars in revenue during the past decade from its lead and silver mines in Myanmar, according to its financial statements.

Singapore’s United Overseas Bank (UOB) — which is known as the offshore bank of choice for Myanmar generals — has told Myanmar banks that it will cut off ties with them by September 1, Nikkei Asia reported on Wednesday.

It will also impose tough new curbs on Visa and Mastercard transactions by Myanmar individuals and banks, restricting their dealings to accounts within UOB.

The latest clampdown was also seen as a response to US pressure on Singapore to curb offshore banking and financial services for Myanmar’s military regime.
