Sorry if this is disappointing to any of you, but we have so few members here now, and so much stuff is still broken, that we don't feel as though continuing is worth it.

However, /r/Piracy has their own Lemmy, and everything is working well on it, so we're going to start directing people there instead, as they share our same values and goals. Thanks for the support guys and again I am sorry this didn't work out. We wanted it to, but it just didn't.

I appreciate the effort in creating and maintaining this Lemmy instance. I don't have any long-term involvement with or knowledge of FMHY beyond finding lemmy.fmhy.ml when I was leaving reddit, agreeing with the community values, and making an account. But I have appreciated this place as my portal to the fediverse, and there's nowhere else I'd rather be.

As there have clearly been some issues in maintaining the instance, I think it would be extremely helpful if you were to create a simple blog to act as an out of band communication channel in the event that the Lemmy instance faces any further troubles. I understand you have divolt, but I have had trouble accessing it after initially joining, and in general it would be nice if there were a simple URL I could navigate to from any device with or without my credentials memorized/use of my password manager to see the status or any events that may impact the functionality of the FMHY Lemmy. If you have something of this nature set up already and I have missed it - that's on me! But perhaps a stickied post pointing to it would help.

That's just my two cents - and again, thank you for creating and maintaining this instance in the first place!

After a full week of trying to fix this and a few days of running with multiple patches, it seems as though there are still problems with federation. So I'm resorting to crowd sourcing: if you notice any problems interacting with other instances (voting, commenting, posting), or you're from another one and can't interact with FMHY, make a comment here. Include two links: one on the side without any issues, and one with them (if possible.)

Example post: New communities may not federate properly.

This will hopefully pinpoint what instances and/or types of activities are causing problems and why - are they using CF or not, are their servers just blocking us, is it specific to posts made on FMHY or does it include FMHY posts made on other instance's communities, stuff like that.

As for current workarounds:

  • There is a userscript known as "LULS" (Lemmy URL Link Switcher) which mainly redirects all links (on other lemmy instances) to a configurable host instance. This script seems to do some funky stuff with federation, and sometimes manages to properly sync posts or communities when used. (Comments may not work after a post has synced.) If you're worried about safety, edit it to only allow usage on the domains you want.
  • Try the regular federation process first. Some instances seem to behave differently to this (mostly lemmy.world during my tests), but searching does occasionally work properly.

I'd also, again, like to ask for anyone with technical knowledge on Lemmy. I'm now currently the only staff member on this and even though we don't have many people here anymore, it doesn't hurt to try or ask.

I'd also like to thank anyone for sticking around for this long, particularly u/Martineski and u/mr_MADAFAKA. Also thank you to dbzer0 for his help on this problem so far. Without everyone still here, we would've stopped running this instance, so thank you :)

Maintenance Notice (lemmy.fmhy.net)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by nullishcat@lemmy.fmhy.net to c/freemediaheckyeah@lemmy.fmhy.net

The server will be down from 18:00 UTC for possibly one hour (not sure how long exactly) to replace the current docker + compose setup with an ansible setup. This is to hopefully fix any current federation problems, and if not, then to at least eliminate any issues software wise.

On a related note - If you're a technowizard, especially when it comes to ActivityPub and Lemmy BE, please message me (either here, over email, Discord (nullishcat), Matrix (nullishcat:matrix.org), or Divolt.) I still do not know the root cause of this problem and have nearly exhausted all potential fixes (the remaining ones being this setup change and switching providers.)

Technical details can be found here: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3862#issuecomment-1711051012

EDIT: We're back up, very sorry for the long wait. (Ansible's setup guide is very poor and didn't make it clear that it needs to be run on a local PC running Linux/Mac and to copy the volumes to /srv/lemmy/volumes.) Federation tests will start shortly.

Does any site have the Netflix live-action series One Piece in 4K? All the sites I've tried are in 1080p.

Error (lemmy.fmhy.net)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Lolen10@lemmy.fmhy.net to c/freemediaheckyeah@lemmy.fmhy.net

I keep getting an error when trying to upload a profile picture or a picture to any post.

This is the error message: SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data

Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be and/or how to fix it?

If you don't like the layout of regular Lemmy, feel free to use these :) (They can also be used for instances other than ours. Except for mlmym, they only have a single instance mode and no default instance config)

And in case you're wondering why we aren't using old.lemmy, a.lemmy etc instead...

Cloudflare charging $10 to have layered subdomains

...it's because CF wants money for that and I'm not paying for that shit lmao

Defederation Policy (lemmy.fmhy.net)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by nbats@lemmy.fmhy.net to c/freemediaheckyeah@lemmy.fmhy.net

What is Defederation?

Defederation means we have disconnected our instance from another, and users from our instance will no longer be able to see anything (communities, posts or comments) coming from it, and their users won't be able to see anything coming from ours.

What will get an Instance Defederated?

Our goal is to avoid defederation, but we will do so under the following circumstances:

  • The instance spreads overwhelming amounts of drama, hate or negativity.

  • The instance is mostly made up bots, and or promotes spam.

  • The instance allows the harassment or doxxing of others.

  • The instance knowingly hosts CSAM or other illegal content.

Has FMHY Defederated Instances?

Only the following, all for breaking the 1st rule above:

  • exploding-heads

  • lemmygrad

  • Rammy

Things to Note:

  • There are circumstances where we may block a specific community within an instance, rather than blocking the entire instance itself, but this is very uncommon.

  • Remember that if there's a community you don't like, you can block it entirely in settings.

  • Keep in mind that our goal is to keep this community safe, so if you see something that breaks our rules please don't hesitate to report it.

  • If its something urgent, you can always contact us easily via Divolt ๐Ÿ’ฌ. Its connected to our discord, so there are mods online 24/7.

Seeing as how the instance is just getting back up, I'm wondering if the stance on defederation is the same or just haven't gotten around to it yet. I remember before we defederated from exploding-heads. A new one that others have pointed out that should be looked into is rammy.site

I want to move back to the FMHY instance, but I have ~40 communities I need transferred, all on different instances.

My issues here are more focused on Lemmy, rather than FMHY, though I figured I'd post it here due to other people likely having a similar issue. (I might post it on the Lemmy Support community if this goes nowhere.)

I've tried manually creating the links, but Lemmy throws an error.

I have also tried searching for the community via the Communities tab, but that doesn't let my go by instance, which is important when the name is something common like c/memes.

In addition, due to the Communities search sorting by top, new, or old, (with no option for relevance) there tends to be other communities that are related, but that are not actually what I'm looking for. I have put an image example here:

less important noteFor things like memes, I usually subscribe to a bunch of the same named communities anyways, but often I'd like to avoid an instance/community for various reasons but it shows up in the results anyways.

(for example, when searching memes, lemmygrad's community might show up, which, despite being called memes, (and not political memes) only contains political memes.

(This is not being shown in the screenshot, as I have blocked the lemmygrad instance due to brigading other communities/users/instances, though I hope what I mean still comes across regardless.))

Edits:

  • replaced 'ร  la' with 'for example'
  • removed unnecessary snippet
  • removed herobrine
  • removed 'added edits section' from edits section, unneeded
  • added "removed 'added edits section' from edits section, unneeded", for the goofs
  • punctuation for added understanding
