Eventhough dated (2014) these maps might be a good starting point for a closer look at supply chains and economic dependencies.

In regards to everyday products this begs the question if people could really go "cold turkey European only". It should be impossible, especially since all manufacturers rely on goods from different countries.

Which doesn't imply, that the gist of strengthening Europe is futil. But it makes clear, that this is a marathon and not a sprint.

The call for EU tech is hitting the news, lets hope this has a great positive impact on our IT industry!

For those searching a mastodon instance, this tool might help to find a neat little living room.

For the people who have not yet decided on a search engine. The most EU way you can go is Ecosia or Qwant as they are building their own search index.

Ecosia is my personal pick as its also aimed at planting trees and they have quite a good browser alongside it.

Hey there!

I am really astonished about the big amount of alternatives we've got in europe.

But I think this is a hard one: Steam.

I have switched from windows to linux a few years ago and I don't plan to go back. Steam has the advantage of the integrated proton-service which allows playing many windows games on linux.

Do we have something similar?

Hello fellow Europeans!

I have already swapped like 95% of all of my american applications to European alternstives (all besides YouTube). However, I have a question…: What the heck is happening on Mastodon?

a) there are a few people there (even in comparison to Lemmy it is just microscopic

b) seems like Mastodon has never seen Any moderation: even though I followed politics-related people/organisations, Mastodon was, almost, bombarding me with unmarked and VERY unwanted NSFW content. Why?

So the question is: how to deal with Mastodon? Is it only me? It would be very nice to get back there and make theiving conversations and threads like here on Lemmy.

I don't use it much but I use URL shorteners sometimes. Currently every alternative I can find is US based. Does anybody have any suggestions for EU based URL shortener websites?

My main usage is just having a shorter URL but limited statistics would ideally also be there (mainly amount of clicks per day)

Avoiding American companies to express disapproval of US policy is great. However, this could give some European companies a reprieve, whose products you should not buy despite everything, because they have an inhumane corporate policy. My favorite example is Nestle. For them, access to drinking water is not a human right and that's how they act.

I currently use cloudflare for a couple of domains to use it for dns, caching/proxying, dns challenges for letsencrypt through traefic and to only white-list certain regions and ips. I do this through the free tier.

Is there any European alternative that provides this as well? The European alter atices I've seen listed on sites primarily seem to focus on just CDN for enterprises.

I use it mainly as a first line security for my homelab, and a VPN isn't an option for me.

Many suggestions on how to replace American products have a very local home in an EU country and are not available without problems or costs in other EU countries or the UK.
Why not also allow local tips in the local language? Europe is not a monophyletic block, but thrives on the diversity of cultures. Our communication here in the community can also express this.

When talking to people don't forget to mention (or summarize) this overview.

If you are fluent in German (or have a good translator) you might also enjoy his blog and persepctive on data sovereignty.

Ich möchte es nur mal erwähnen: #buyfromeu
Und für Infos ist es gar nicht nötig, den US-Dienst reddit zu nutzen. Da gibbet im #fediverse nämlich was:

  • What's the difference between this and !buyeuropean@feddit.uk ?

  • Are we allowed to submit messages in German here? (and/or other languages?)

  • Is this community specifically about the EU? (no british and swiss products?)--

I'm curious what your stance on using products and services from non-European foundations is.

The discussion on LibreOffice made me think about your acceptance of open source products or free services from no-European, or even US American, foundations (The Open Document Foundartion is registerd germany, though).

Mozilla data privacy controversy aside my thought would for example apply to

  • Apache Software Foundation (OpenOffice)
  • Mozilla Foundation (Firefox, Thunderbird, ...)
  • Signal foundation (Signal)

to name the biggest.

For me the use of non-commercial or even open-source products and services from different non-European countries is okay, as they are funded by donations.

The whole idea of buyFromEU seems to funnel money into the own economy in order to have a strong market, and also to proudly use European products. The above mentioned foundations help to increase data sovereignty and after all break loose from commercial solutions that aim at deep integrations and walled gardens.

Europeans!

What I am asking for or proposing is a team of a few people who would work together on creating pro-European content such as propaganda posters, infographics, and videos. It would be great to bring together a few of us who specialise or whose hobby is graphic design or video editing and so on. Working together, our content would be of much higher quality than such made by an individual.

I believe it is necessary to to this in order to fight for the opinion of masses. It would be awesome and it would be an honour to work with such people.

The content might involve, of course, European alternatives, spreading European values, promoting European unanimity, perhaps ideas of federalisation / common army and competences, and much, much more.

I believe that it is crucial to do such things together when encountering the entire new world.

Glory to Europe!

As the title said, I'm looking for a stainless steel french press. So far the only producer that actually makes them in Europe seems to be Stelton (Denmark). Bodum looked good, but they do have a factory in China and don't clearly disclose in the webshop where the specific product is made. Additionally Amazon lists the Bodum Columbia as "Made in China". Scanpan is another European brand, but the TOGO line is made in China unfortunately.

So I'd be happy to get any pointers for brands to look at.

Edit: The options so far are

  • Stelton EM77, stainless steel cylinder, 80€, made in Denmark
  • Bodum Douro, stainless steel cylinder, 170€, made in Portugal

All other options (WMF, other Bodum models, Bialetti, Paderno) seem to be produced in China or the US.

I didn't expect it to be this difficult to find viable options.

On this site you can find several hosted open source software services. They're hosted in the EU and are configured privacy friendly.

The site gives a good overview for existing alternatives and opens source tooling in general.

Personally, I often use the services https://teamjoin.de/ (Opentalk conferencing), https://dnsforge.de/ (adblocking DNS) and https://gruble.de/ (searxng search engine).
