PC physical copies hasn't totally died. You can still buy boxed editions and collectors editions for certain games.

And digital copies for consoles is quite popular too now. In fact, for many less popular games, not physical version is available.

so, not sure your observations universal.

regardless though, I'd guess it's because the console market has to contend with the fact that many console owners won't have internet on their consoles.

this is the primary (official) reason why most banking apps require an unrooted device, and check that the bootloader hasn't been tampered with. they don't really care what you do with your phone, but a custom ROM doesn't have to comply with the usual official checks and balances, and so theoretically could be malicious.

the bank "trusts" the official OEM rom, because the OEM rom belongs to a company that can be "controlled". ie. pressured into ensuring apps are safe, etc.

the bank doesn't trust the open source rom, because it isn't "owned" by an entity that can be controlled.

a reason lots of companies don't like open source, is because"who do you sue when something goes wrong?". closed source isn't any safer, but at least you know who to sue when it breaks.

This seems reasonable.

In my opinion, Real proper coffee isn't cheap, but so satisfyingly tasty, but instant coffee is so terrible that the only reason for drinking it is if you can't afford the good stuff.

I've heard a phrase for that: "happy effin Monday" ;)

It is not an attack to simply express disagreement, and not everyone who disagrees is coming from a place of hostility.

The whole point of a forum is for healthy dialogue. You can't just go around accusing everyone who disagrees with you as being abusive and disingenuous.

check out the sidebar on Beehaw's instance.

they have been very transparent about their approach to rules, and their expectations for how discourse should be conducted.

it is permitted to have a different opinion, and expressing that opinion politely is tolerated. expressing hate speech (as interpeted by the admins) is not tolerated, but also expressing neutral opinions unkindly is not allowed.

their approach to moderating, as described in their sidebars and pinned messages, is that it is better to try polite discourse to encourage good behavior, before resorting to bans.

again, I won't agree with all of the admins political views, but their commitment to transparency and allowing all discussions in kindness is a central pillar that most will agree is pretty important for fostering the kind of community Beehaw wants to foster.

When you turn federation off, your users can only see activity and posts from your own instance.

Federation is what enable you to seamlessly interact with all the other instances. This can also be set at yhe instance level, to pick and choose which other instances your instance can talk to.

  1. As others have pointed out, how does shutting them out completely stay in keeping with fediverse principles? This is legitimate question since, to me, it seems like despite the risks, it's antithetical to the spirit of the fediverse until they demonstrate bad behavior here.

how much bad behavior do you want to see before accepting that MetaZuck is evil and has no go intentions?

There's a literal trail of dead startups and bodies.

It's not that they might do something better.

It's that they have a history of encouraging the competition to adopt an open standard (to gain the active users), and then purposely scuttling the standard in order to sink the competition (and leave the users with no functioning alternative).
