Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.

Well, I guess they weren't that committed.

When subscribing to a service means supporting a company that would arbitrate your wrongful death at their hands, or tailor its products to be more appealing to bigots and racists, the only ethical course of action is piracy.

A cynic would say that the old one is no doubt more correct, but the total number of people having actually read it in its entirety is probably in the low double digits. The new one, high double digits easily.

So, I figure there are a few possible takes here...

  1. They didn't really care about diversity before
  2. They don't care about being anti-woke
  3. They've only ever cared about making money and they've made these changes to appease who they perceived to be the majority
  4. They are afraid of trump

I say it's a combination of all of them.

I'm okay with this, mainly because I never believe companies actually mean that stuff. And when you know they don't mean it, it's just patronizing. Also I'm like bruh... I picked out the movie, I know what year it was made, I don't live under a rock

Why does it matter if they "mean" it? The point is to help people avoid topics that are sensitive to them. Who cares if they meant it or not. Whatever that means.

It actually never occurred to me that those messages would be useful to anyone... but the shorter phrasing they reverted to is less patronizing anyways, and I always appreciate that

!!WARNING!! This movie about racist Klan members murdering black people contains harsh language!

Is that what Dumbo is about?

Yeah, agreed. They changed from:

"Performatively obediently a bunch of good people, and definitely not a malicious hive of American Psycho lawyers and professional thieves, mining and sanding down and reselling the dreams of children, who would be perfectly happy harvesting organs from prisoners or anything else that would enable them to profit and won't get them in trouble"

To:

"Performatively obedient to a separate bunch of people who would also be happy harvesting organs et cetera, as long as they'll leave us alone to make our money, and we won't get in trouble"

There's not much of value in the alteration, other than noting one more from the variety of outlets hewing ever more closely to the Nazis if they think it'll enable them to keep their heads down and be safe. It will not.

Better than "Trigger warning: There is a gay character but thankfully he is a throwaway one so you can watch a cut that skips his scene!"

Litmus test: is there a stereotyped black fawn in Disney's Fantasia?
