I'm not suggesting to preserve a Linux version only. If anything, I meant to test and make sure the Windows build works with Proton on Linux, in addition to making sure it works on Windows. Some games have Linux versions, they just do not care about them either. And maybe make a Linux version of the GOG launcher as well.

[–] thingsiplay 1 points 1 day ago

Thanks, lol. I hope they realize soon that Rust is not forced to be used. Also the US government didn't even talk about Rust only, but memory safe languages and listed Rust as an example.

[–] thingsiplay 1 points 1 day ago

I would encourage you to do so. I do not think it would be wrong to learn how to use a common Open Source program like this. If you watch lot of YouTube, there is a channel Davies Media Design that teaches a lot of stuff in GIMP:

There’s no such thing as a language that’s advantages outweigh the security risks of rushed development to convert decades of tested code.

Who said or suggested that anyway? Other than bringing this up now. Who says to convert decades of tested code to rushed code of new language?? Do people read the stuff before they reply?

Making them die by Ai instead by human doesn't help anybody.

[–] thingsiplay 2 points 1 day ago

You wouldn't be first who asks this. There are attempts and instructions how to do this, step by step. But I'm not confident enough to recommend any of those. Maybe they are outdated or your machine requires some setup which is not covered. I do not recommend doing this, but if you have no time to setup a new OS from scratch, then at least make a backup before attempting any of this.

I would ask those on the official EndeavourOS forum, which is active and helpful: https://forum.endeavouros.com/

[–] thingsiplay 20 points 2 days ago (4 children)

EndeavourOS. I used Manjaro for 1.5 years before switching to EndeavourOS. (BTW before that I was also using Ubuntu for 13 years in row...) I couldn't be happier. It's closer to Archlinux and a bit more focused on terminal, but overall hassle free for me. Updates come quicker and not in batches like Manjaro did. Which means more often new versions of packages and no compatibility or other issues with AUR caused by Manjaro. What desktop environment did you use before? KDE is pretty good on EndeavourOS and what I would recommend.

  1. No opt-out or opt-in telemetry.
  2. Same package manager and repository from Archlinux.
  3. You have already experience with Manjaro and the Archlinux stuff, so going to a similar system like EndeavourOS makes sense. However its a bit more terminal oriented, with a few GUI related help.

Because of your prior experience with Manjaro, I think EndeavourOS is a good candidate you should have in mind.

This has nothing to do with current market share.

[–] thingsiplay 1 points 2 days ago

Hehe. I never played War Gods, but always read about it. That game is more like Mortal Kombat in gameplay style, as it is from the same makers. Fight of Gods plays a little bit more Street Fightish, with its moveset and gameplay feel. And the audiovisuel styling is more like Soul Calibur, but not that good off course.

I'm a huge emulation and retro fan. Maybe I'll check War Gods out today. :-)

[–] thingsiplay 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yes, the DRM free games is a huge win for preservation. I'm not discounting the value of GOG. But that's something we had already. My critique was about the focus on Windows only, which is not the best idea if games should be preserved "forever". Because Windows 11 will be the only supported one soon.

But any efforts trying to make games work forever is always good. At least they didn't rule out other OS in the future. While my initial reaction was a bit negative in the nature, because I was very disappointment, I'm still happy they do something about it. It's even more bitter because they supported Linux in the past... But let's see how this is going. I don't want to end this in a negative note. I mean it can only get better with such a goal.

There is Fight of Gods, a mediocre 1v1 fighting game (in the style of Street Fighter). Has a few pretty cool music.

Well its possible to have a bridge system, like its possible with Discord and Matrix. So from technical standpoint, I think it would be possible, unless they choose to not.

As for the centralized vs decentralized, BlueSky uses the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT_Protocol , which is decentralized. If you do not agree to this, then do you have an explanation to why?

Edit: Funny enough I read this AT_Protocl is Based on ActivityPub, according to the Wikipedia article.

This is a short development update on our progress towards the first release candidate for GIMP 3.0. We recently reached the string freeze milestone. What this means is that there will be no more changes in user-facing text (like GUI labels and messages) so that translators can work on the final translations for the 3.0 release.

Now you can play DOOM on your GPU. You are confused? Well this means the CPU is no longer used for the logic of the game, it runs basically entirely on GPU. So the graphics card is not only used for graphics, but the main logic of the game. It just needs a little bit help from CPU to start the process I think.

It's a fork from a fork of a fork of a fork:

id-Software/DOOM > insane-adding-machines/DOOM > maximevince/fbDOOM > ozkl/doomgeneric > jhuber6/doomgeneric/tree/amdgpu

I quote the developer (from README):

why

Because I can.

Arch Linux is entering into a direct collaboration with Valve. Valve is generously providing backing for two critical projects that will have a huge impact on the distribution: a build service infrastructure and a secure signing enclave. By supporting work on a freelance basis for these topics, Valve enables them to work on them without being limited solely by the free time of our volunteers.

(Edit: I always forget that Beehaw will convert every ampersand character in code segments to &. Have this in mind when reading the code below. Do you have these problems too with your instance?)

If you update your system from terminal, do you have a shortcut that bundles bunch of commands? I'm on EndevourOS/Arch using Flatpak. Rustup is installed and managed by itself. The empty command is a function to display and delete files in the trash using the program trash-cli. In my .bashrc:

alias update='eos-update --yay \
    ; flatpak uninstall --unused \
    ; flatpak update \
    ; rustup update \
    ; empty'

empty() {
    trash-empty -f --dry-run |
        awk '{print $3}' |
        grep -vF '/info/'
    trash-empty -f
}

I just need to type update. Also there are following two aliases, which are used very rarely, at least months apart and are not part of the main update routine:

alias mirrors='sudo reflector \
        --protocol https \
        --verbose \
        --latest 25 \
        --sort rate \
        --save /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist \
    && eos-rankmirrors --verbose \
    && yay -Syyu'

alias clean='paccache -rk3 \
    && paccache -ruk1 \
    && journalctl --vacuum-time=4weeks \
    && balooctl6 disable \
    && balooctl6 purge \
    && balooctl6 enable \
    && trash-empty -f'

This question is probably asked a million times, but the replies are always fun and sometimes reveals improvements from others to adapt.

Is it just me or did kdenlive broke for you too? I'm on an Archlinux based system and just updated the system. A few hours before update kdenlive worked. Update was not small, so its hard to tell the exact cause. I've tried to downgrade kdenlive, but same issue. I use Linux for a very long time now, but still get lost with errors like these.^^ Any idea what I should do? Does it work for you?

I get this on start (I reset the configuration files too):

$ kdenlive --version
kdenlive 24.08.1

$ kdenlive
