Many thanks, I'll look into it.

Thanks, sounds like a good idea. I'll definately try that.

[–] Rambler@lemm.ee 1 points 10 months ago

I'll bear it in mind, thanks. Is this something that you've done?

Some great food for thought - and some ideas that I hadn't considered before - esp. about the mood I'm trying to convey.

Your comments about taking lots of photos makes good sense - with a few batteries and a couple of sd cards, I could take hundreds of photos - and maybe if I see one that I like, I can return to explore more of the same.

Many thanks for the great tips.

This is an area of Photography I really struggle with. So I'm interested to learn if anyone has any good tips for capturing photos of trees.

It's winter here in the UK and most of the trees are now leafless.

Grateful for any thoughts.

Hi, apologies for the delay in replying and thanks for the advice - I've been following it this weekend after getting some more logs.

So far it's working well - I'm on top-down (Scandinavian) method - gets a really nice fire going quick and heats up the flue pretty quickly too. Your tip on getting a moisture tester: I'm gonna follow up soon when I get paid. I get that it's going to be pretty useful.

I got the two controls mixed up: left being main air vent (which I now keep open until the fire gets red hot) and the right (which I used to keep closed all the time) and now leave open. So, it's running pretty nice now, my next challenge is keeping it going! I got some complaints that the room was going cold so I'm not sure if leaving the logs to go to embers was leaving it too late before putting more logs on.

Again, thanks for the heads up, this is a learning curve for us, but I really appreciate the help.

Leather strop for sharpening

I'm genuinely curious here - really? As someone who always has to mess with the old fashioned 'steel' (mind your hands cus there's no guard on it!) sharpener, are they better? Honestly, heard of them, never used but interested.

Now, a Sony Bravia - what size and price may I ask ? And how difficult is it to remove all the shit ad functionality from it ?

I've had my 32" for like 8 years but definately looking for the same quality piece of kit.

[–] Rambler@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Excellent! Glad you found what you wanted - I'll bookmark this for when I have to replace my trusty Bravia! 👍

I'm dreading replacing my dumb tv, but can confirm that the nvidia shield was the best thing I ever bought for entertainment: just sideload your apps and off you go.

Take the cable out of the tv, plug it into your android box and hdmi to the tv.

Can recommend STN, cloudstream and plex.

Good luck.

Great advice and thanks for taking the time.

For what it's now worth, this has been my way so far (which by the sound of it may be why I'm unsuccessful): load kindling, one log and a couple of firelighters, light fire, keep control open and also door.

Close door after 3-4 mins, wait until log is burnt on one side then turn it over, wait until its burnt through then add another log then repeat turn and refill.

Not getting chance to watch tv properly as I'm constantly watching the fire!

Do you find any type of log better than others?

Thanks again for the advice.

[–] Rambler@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Thaks for the oxyclear tip and yeah, loading the fire up initially is something I struggle with - it stays in our it goes out. I'll try that loading fashion - cheers.

We've got a small log burner with a light grey stone surround.

Every time I open the door to poke the logs, bits of soot fall out and mark the stone when I brush them up.

I'm getting a little worried as the house is rented, so I want to leave it in good condition.

I've tried washing liquid and cream cleaner but they just don't shift the stains.

Does anyone have any good tips that might help. I'm in UK, so products I can get my hands on here would help.

Many thanks.

Hi, on f-droid there's an app called Android Samba Client but I can't get it to connect to my shared folder because of permissions - it says, but I can't find a lot of documentation about it.

Have you seen this?

I'm hoping that it's not connecting because of something I'm doing wrong - and maybe I can figure it out later (poss. because of my lack of understanding on my part of the way plex should share permissions with other devices).

If you get anywhere further, please let me know. - it just doesn't seem to be a well covered topic unfortunately.

This may not be the correct place for this, if so please point me elsewhere.

My other half doesn't have broadband, so I'm looking to write dvds so we can watch then on a dvd player.

To this end I've gotten a copy of ashampoo and downloaded some films (.mkv files) and I'm now looking to copy them onto dvds. Now I know I can't just copy the files on, and the software's asking for mpeg files only.

Has anyone come across - or know how to actually convert and write properly? A guide perhaps?

I know it's old technology, but it's gotta be better than just watching the crap on free tv. TIA.

Edit: many thanks to all for the great - and varied answers. Certainly lots of info to 'chew' on.

Just started using the above setup and gotta say this is the bees bollox - I'm so impressed by just how fluid it all works - free from an insane price too - it just works flawlessly!

I've got to add in here - Unchained (F-droid) which connects to an RD account and allows to search stuff and either 'aside' for later or download immediately - the app (imho) is wicked and definately worth checking out and supporting.

The great stuff aside, I have one general question: feel free to add more...

Saving stuff: I know that torrentio will save links into my RD account for me to pick up later, but can I get it to auto download into a folder of my choice - to any folder on my network? I can get it to save onto my phone (via Unchained) but then I've got to transfer it into my library.

I'm looking for a easy/lazy way I guess.

Any thoughts?

I've just found Syncthing and I'm blown away by this app. So, I'm interested if any of my other apps can be replaced by foss equivalents that can be synced.

My first suggestion is Obsidian - which, at first I had problems syncing with paid solutions, but syncs flawlessly with Syncthing.

Does anyone have any more suggestions? Ideally looking to sync between android devices, but any info is much appreciated.

Update : many thanks for all the suggestions - some good ones. Hopefully we can keep adding the ones we find that can be synced from local folders.

I've had this Vax upright for about 5 years. Recently it's started to cut off when I'm using it. I feel the base - and it's hot. Any ideas for anything that I can do to fix it?

I'm not technically minded but I will have a go - if it will save me having to buy a new vacuum.

Edit: many thanks for all the replies and advice.

Does anyone know of a foss android app that will notify me if I load certain apps that I also need to use with vpn on?

I don't need my vpn always on, but I do for some apps. Ideally I'd like to be able to toggle the apps I want it to monitor.

If it could switch the vpn on as well that would be top.

I'm pretty thy a newbie when it comes to networking and stuff, but was wondering if it's possible to run jellyfin as a server on my shield. A bit fed up looking at plex and wondering what alternatives I have. Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Edit: thanks all for the replies and suggestions.

Trying to setup obtainium and I'm forgetting just where I got some of my apps from. Does anyone know if I can get a list of all the apps that I've installed by repo? This could be just a way to achieve this or an app itself - not too fussed, but I feel updating my foss apps is getting on top of me. Thanks.

Is there a way to cast from my phone to a first gen chromecast without using mobile data? I thought I could do this by downloading films to my phone and then stream to cc, but it seems to throttle my tethering data.

So I'm not sure if I'm understanding the way this works: I thought it would just cast from phone to tv - but it's using huge chunks of data for small films and my plan is limited.

Any advice on this or better ways to do this?
