Oh wow, nice! I especially appreciate the ProtonDB link-- I'd known about Proton, but not ProtonDB. :) And that's awesome, re GW2 especially!

I'm thinking I'm going to try Pop!OS... I was reading reviews etc. of various gaming/newbie Linux stuff on [https://itsfoss.com/](It's Foss) and they're a big fan, and Pop seems pretty readymade for gaming stuff. I plan to put it on a flash drive & test it before dual booting to it, and if I'm not a fan, Linux Mint it is! I tried that once before, years ago.

Thanks so much for the info, both of you!

I do in fact have Nvidia... bummer! I'm not too worried about AntiCheats that don't support Linux since that mostly seems to be for PvP-heavy games, which are not usually a thing I'm into. Ark & Rust were about the only games like that I liked, & I played on PvE servers. But I do think some MMOs use AntiCheats, right? Though for sure not GW2 or FFXIV, which are my current obsessions.

My current plan is, since support for Windows 10 is being dropped in October 2025, maybe I'll upgrade to Windows 11 so I can keep getting security updates, and then dual-boot to Linux, but have Linux as the main. Like 90% of the time I'll be in Linux Mint (or whichever one I pick), and then just swap over to Windows briefly if/when I need to.

The VM plan sounded really awesome, but I think the nVidia fix looks beyond my ability. I'm someone who can't code & only knows like 3 DOS commands, but can set up a Minecraft modpack (without changing any recipes) & upload the files to servers others run, or otherwise handle setting up mods for games in general. I'm saying all that to try and give some idea of my expertise or lack thereof. I'd consider myself a low-end power user, maybe? So given that, does this plan sound reasonable, re the dual booting & mostly swapping to Linux Mint (or whatever distro)?

I'm a disabled gamer with lots of time on my hands. I'm considering dual booting Linux Mint (or something else equally easy to transition to) with Windows 10. My plan would be to entirely swap to Linux, but keep Windows for the few games that require it. However, I have some concerns.

Do I need to worry about certain niche programs I use not being Linux compatible, or do things like Wine make that irrelevant? I'm especially curious about 3rd party game/mod launchers, like GW2Launcher and XIVLauncher, or Overwolf/Curseforge.

What about Windows store apps-- is there any way to use them while in Linux? Sounds like a dumb question, but figured I'd ask just in case. This part isn't a deal breaker either way.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I support any move, and would follow-- and probably be more active.

I really like how you put this, and the example given.

I believed that all cats were girls, and all dogs were boys. If they had babies, then any boys would end up as puppies, and any girls would be kittens.

I look first for a willingness to ban toxic assholes, and then topic-specific if possible, video gaming or other hobbies & interests. I was on a gaming-related Mastodon that was very 'fuck Nazis' for a bit. They were really great, but I didn't have the time to be on Mastodon, so I ended up leaving Mastodon entirely until all this Reddit kerfluffle. Now it looks like that spot is pretty empty, so I came here. (The gaming one was elekk.xyz if anyone's interested. I don't think I still have my account there, or know how to get in it anyway.)

Yeah! I haven't played MU* stuff in a long time because of anxiety & long covid (brain fog & exhaustion are... well, exhausting) but the game Keys is specifically aimed at people in non-US timezones, people who aren't on a 'normal' schedule, and people with disabilities/illnesses that keep them from playing regularly. I'm really strongly considering joining. Nervous, though, haha... it's been years now. <_<

For me, a concept that really helped me feel like I'm not crazy for being upset, is microaggressions. I'm white, but a woman, and I always was bugged by how upset I'd get by sexist shit. The people saying, 'there are no women on the internet' and 'go make me a sandwich' etc.

Each one of them is no big deal-- but it's not just one. It's dozens upon dozens upon dozens... for your whole life. If I went my whole life in full equality with men, and one asshole said, 'go make me a sandwich' I'd be like, 'wow, what a weird asshole' and shrug it off. But it's not one time, and it's not in a life where I have equality with men.

It's the whole concept behind the water torture where one drop drips on your head, over and over, for days upon days. Only it's your whole life. And always, there will be people saying, "It was just a joke" or "it's just one water drop, GOD."

I said this in another comment, but: some of AresMUSH is real-time roleplay, but at least on the game I last played on, a lot of people did play by post roleplay scenes, too. I talked a bit about Ares [https://beehaw.org/comment/503026] here. (Not sure if I’m doing the linking right… pretty new here. Also, I’m not affiliated with Ares or work for them or anything, just really enjoyed my time on a game there.)

Oh hey, nice! For you & other people into roleplay online and such (and especially telnet to MUDs/MUSHes), check out [https://aresmush.com/](Ares MUSH) which is a pretty modern take on telnet roleplay. You can even roleplay on the website, or you can connect with telnet clients (which is what I've always preferred). It's really moved telnet roleplay up to at least the 2010s era. ;)
