Triple-check that our mortage is paid off in the event of my death, so that my wife and children will have a place to live after I (sole breadwinner) am gone.

Try finding a public boardgame night instead of a gentleman's club - both the library and the game store have them here.

time

I had a good friend move to the same small town I'm in. Between work and family, we don't get together for months on end, even though he's a 5 min drive down the road. We want to get together, but we're both too exhausted and burnt out.

Not the best article

To be honest, I thought it was quite terrible.

They'll start with the union leaders, and work their way down until the organization is broken enough that everybody goes back to work.

Doom - we upgraded to 16MB of RAM so we could play it through Windows 95.

Win95 wanted 4MB and Doom wanted all 8 that we had, so we had to exit, reboot, and go to DOS then run it manually.

Small farmer here - we keep exactly one less production bird than the maximum legal requirement, as most farmers of our scale do.

Bought concert tickets for October. Total cost for tickets was $195.20. It's not a local show (ie: the bands have recognition beyond our town), so we have to travel to the city - 4 hours plus a $75 ferry. Plus overnight stay and food in the city. And we need a sitter to watch the kids, overnight.

So we're pushing $600-$700 for a concert. That's a "once every few years" thing, when we've saved enough and the band is one we really want to see.

Local shows are rock cover bands on a Sunday evening, usually, but I work Monday at 6am.

I suspect that as things get worse, more people will be focused on personal survival vs stopping the rate of change. Sometimes these will be the same actions, sometimes they won't.

Me, with 20 years experience making software: yes, totally happy about this. (This makes it much easier to keep up with the latest newfangled bullshit.)

It just feels wrong to me to take the paycheck and not put my heart into the work.

I felt the same way, until after the second corporate buyout. The company I started with my career with is gone, the company that bought them is gone, and the company that bought them is gone as well. The product I worked on for six years is gone and the company website only exists in the internet archive and a few archived press releases.

I put my heart into it and it's just.. gone entirely.

It's one of the last times I put my heart into my work, because all that happened in the long run is the board of directors got more wealthy.

The subsequent buyouts (and layoffs) I've been through have gone much better for me, personally, because I wasn't as emotionally involved in the company/product.

I'm at the point now where I'm in a more senior role, doing consulting, and I dgaf about the client's business or project beyond getting my work done on time and to the required quality. I start at 9, log off at 5pm, get my work done by noon, and enjoy spending more time with my kids in the summer.
