The main issue for me is also the pvp aspect, which in reality just makes for a somewhat unfair game. I would love a battle royalish game that was PVE, or just collaborative in some manner, where everyone got together to fight bots and gain control of the territory. It's definetly tougher to implement, but it would be great.

Might wanna try out co-op shooters. I thought I hated MMO shooters but DRG has been a wonderful experience.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried a few, DRG, Warframe, destiny, and some others, but that hasn't clicked for me unfortunately.
I really feel a game like Rust or PUBG, but with a massive pick up and play scenario with shared goals where everyone collaborates, would be a great game.
I haven't come across anything similar, as I think it would be something between a 3/4-person shooter and a full blown MMORPG?
I don't know, there are likely many technical complications obviously, but I feel there is unexplored terrain there.
I dont understand what makes them "somewhat unfair".
But I strongly agree we need more PvE stuff. I love competitive games, but they are so commital. More casual experiences would make it alot easier for me to try new games without too much commitment, and PvE sounds like it would fit in well.
I spent lots of time in Erangel one spring/summer several years ago.
I had fun, but I don't know why every big game had to become battle royale. I had my fill of fun, and was on to the next thing.
Companies are constantly seeking for profits
I played Fortnite for about a year after the BR came out. I enjoyed the PvE version of the game and the BR had the right balance of ridiculousness and solo gameplay I wanted out of a competitive shooter.
I never enjoyed the team driven BRs because I don't find my team relying on me relaxing.
Not a fan of br's. I really wish hero shooters stuck around for longer, but unfortunately overwatch cornered the market then imploded. Now we're stuck with Valo, CS, Apex and Fortnite for competitive shooters, which leaves a lot of genres of the table.
I just wished arena shooters were more popular. Suppose I should boot up Quake Champions / Live again sometime.
I tried those but it was just ,walk for 10 min , die, wait 3 min in lobby ,rinse and repeat . I was bored after 30 minutes . Also ,I don't like the theme ans visual of all those game. I don't like the aesthetic of fortnite and all of them . Too cartoonish and funny for me. I prefer dark and grim or realistic world.
I enjoyed the battle royals when pubg came out but then so many came out in a short time. I think the next big thing will be extraction shooters game types.
I hated them from the beginning. They're boring. It's so much walking and looting and very few shooting. I don't even like tac shooters either though, I also find those boring. I rather lean towards the arena and "hero" shooter side. Actual gun fights with good teamwork which last long is what I like. Unfortunately, that's not as popular anymore.
I played a ton of PUBG when it came out, got my fix with that one and never really played any of the games that came after
