Hi! I'm Peppe, just your average end user with a little bit of poltiical conscience

[–] retronautickz 5 points 1 year ago

Hi, I'm Pallas/retronautickz. I can't consider myself a refugee, even though I use(d) Reddit, because I'm not new to the fediverse and it wasn't the Reddit API changes that made me decide to try Lemmy, but rather wanting to try out other forms of federated social networks other than the one I already use (mastodon)

About me? I'm 29, vegan, queer, neurodivergent and disabled. My interests are languages, both learning and conlanging, and anything vintage (my username being a reference to this). If my profile picture isn't clue enough, I'm a big fan of classical music (and I've been since I was a little kid), but I love music in general and I'm open to listen/discover new artists and genres/styles.

Hi, my name is Alicja or Layla. I am trans girl. I am really interested in almost anything technology related, and I am also interested in science, mathematics, foss and bunch more. I am currently studying to get mechatronics degree.

[–] TMoney 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What's mechatronics? Like a robots degree?

[–] KMohZaid@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"combination of mechanical, electrical, computer and software skills"

I haven't posted yet, I guess I made an account on a different thing but it looks like I can still post here. Hope that's okay! You all seem so welcoming and kind.

Not only is it okay, it appears to be one of the key benefits to federated networks. Welcome fellow newbie.

Can I use really bad introduction line?

G'day all, Dalek_Thal here, having walked through a door to a new dimension by doing midichlorians.

Definitely looking forward to what Lemmy brings, my hope is that I'll get my old subreddits back, given time.

[–] Knickknack 4 points 1 year ago

Hi everyone! I just arrived here from Reddit, and am looking forward to getting to know Beehaw's communities. I think my discord bio described me best: geriatric millennial, entertainment junkie (books, shows, movies, news, gossip), nature enjoyer. I'm a member of the LGBTQIA community, involved in science fields by trade, and on a perpetual mission to learn new things. Happy to be here.

[–] Carosello 4 points 1 year ago

Hi i'm L. I've been on reddit since 2012 and would like an alternative! I used to use chatrooms a lot as a kid (don't worry I stayed safe!) and am kinda looking for that camaraderie again :)))) Big pop culture nerd

[–] Master 4 points 1 year ago

I've almost signed up for this a few time but never felt the need to complete the sign up since there was always reddit... but now I'm starting to doubt reddit will survive unharmed. So here I am.

[–] yumi_uwu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 year ago

Hi i am Yumi 23, just a lost soul somewhere in your small little rectangle in your pocket. I wish everyone a nice day.

[–] Prymu 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hi I am prymu and I am a reddit referee. I am from poland and am interested in geopolitics and technology of all sorts. Lately I have found myself to be a server admin for my own "homelab" (it is just 1 server for now). I also am interested is aviation and ai art (stable diffusion)

[–] destructdisc@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago

lemmyfly.org has you covered for aviation!

I’m a Reddit refugee who met my future husband on Reddit 13 years ago. It feels weird to be leaving.

Came here from Reddit! Just hoping to talk to other people about my interests, idk how much I'll post though lol.

[–] megpoid@lemmy.pt 4 points 1 year ago

I'm a 22 year old student and recently a Reddit refugee, still trying to find the right communities in this network. I like linguistics, languages in general, biology and, as a stereotypical nerd, anime, manga, TTRPG and videogames, though I play mostly older games, through emulation.

[–] davefischer 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Computers, art, music, blah blah blah. My cats think I'm cool.

[–] khalic 4 points 1 year ago

And I agree with them! Sick beard

[–] andrew@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago

Hello, i'm andrew and like many — a reddit refugee. I'm a graphic designer and web developer who currently resides in the UK, but is planning on moving to Germany later this year. It feels nice to be looking around all of the different communities, my main focus at the moment is learning German.

[–] khalic 4 points 1 year ago

Ooooh this takes me back to the forum era, with elaborate intro posts, trying to impress every one. Good times…

So I’m Khalic, reddit immigrant and very happy to be part a nice community where respect and tolerance is valued. I’m a cis guy, gay, around 40, living in europe, big video game enthusiast, software developer in biotech, I love to learn, dogs, walks, music, reading and many other things.

See you around here

[–] azureeight 4 points 1 year ago

Hoy~ I'm not really a refugee from anywhere in particular, I've been slowly squeezed out of social spaced for a few years now. I love people, but it's hard to want to participate when you get shouted down. Hopefully I've found a nice place here with y'all, it definitely feels inviting!

I have a lot of labels that can be of various levels of usefulness, but I think if those closest were to to be asked about me "kind" is the first word that would come to mind. I took the "do unto others" thing really seriously, even if I ditched the rest.

I'm queer as the day is long and I partially communicate in memes. Most of my time not gaming, I casually work on my dream game in my head. Just a classic nerd from the 90s.

[–] CrispyPeach 4 points 1 year ago

Hi everyone! I'm a software developer from NYC that likes to ride bikes. My family is from Malaysia, where I also spent my childhood so I'm quite fond of food from there.

I used to do dragon boat racing, now I just eat the zongzi during that festival. I also cook mostly Chinese food at home, trying to emulate what my parents and grandparents made for me growing up. After a long day, I like to play games on my PC and switch, currently on Splatoon, Zelda and Apex from time to time. I also have a white fluffy puppy that's actually just a snow tornado.

Good to meet you all!

[–] Shhalahr 4 points 1 year ago

I'm shhalahr, a Reddit refugee. I hail from the Midwest of the United States.

I'm just looking for new interesting communities to gain insight into the world around me.

Mow that the third party apps are officially gone, I'm off of Reddit for good. I suppose I should embrace that and start figuring out what I want as a Lemmy avatar instead of this Snoovatar I brought over with me.

[–] ursakhiin 3 points 1 year ago

I'm Ursakhiin. I can be called a refugee. I had been looking for a replacement off and on for a couple of years now but nothing ever took. I had become worn down by the pure memes and abuses by Reddits community.

I'm a software developer who plays video games and scuba dives in my free time.

[–] lwgrs 3 points 1 year ago

Well, I tried introducing myself via kbin and I was going to reply to that introduction since I have now been accepted to beehaw...but I can't find that reply in this thread. So I'll write again!

I work in media (behind the scenes...but I also have a few podcasts on the go and I blog), I have epilepsy, and I like to talk about all sorts of subjects. I'm doing a poor job summarizing myself so I'll just copy/paste from my Mastodon page (with some redactions):

Writer/podcaster; fan of books, podcasts, hockey, baseball, curling & movies. Regional Traffic Manager for [REDACTED]. Views & opinions are my own.

I was also diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 35 (4 years ago, now). Sometimes I talk about that.

[–] TheGiantKorean 3 points 1 year ago

Hey y'all! I'm a giant Korean (half Korean, really). I am a long time web app developer turned IT director. I love food/cooking, gardening, and playing or running D&D. I've been running a 5e game for 4 years now, and playing in a 1e Osric game for a year.

[–] Frexican21@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

I'm also switching over from Reddit! I didn't post as much on Reddit but I will try to here. Hoping to find similar communities as the ones on Reddit such as sourdough, city communities (Brussels, Edinburgh, etc.) And games. Still trying to figure out the fediverse but liking it a lot so far!

[–] jlarex 3 points 1 year ago

Hi everybody, another reddit refugee here. I'm liking the vibe of this place so far, reminds me of the early days of reddit before it got too full of trolls, bots, & spam. Some of My interests are tech, art, craft and diy hobbies, 3d printers, lgbt topics.

[–] nickb333 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hello. Been here since April already. I'm a late Baby boomer, dad to one, granddad to four. Quite introvert and reserved (unless alcohol is involved) but if you poke me enough I might engage in conversation with you. Self-deprecating sense of humour.

Most of the time live in the UK but my SO lives in the US and I spend a couple of months a year over there, she spends time here too. We'll eventually settle in one place but for now we both have active jobs so this has been a good compromise for the last 15 years. Add step-dad to one and step-granddad to two.

Religious beliefs - confirmed atheist - but I respect others' beliefs if that's what they choose and they live by their convictions (not just the one hour they attend their place of worship a week.)

Sexual orientation - I am a heterosexual male, however. I strongly believe that others may have different preferences, or be uncertain what their preferences are and I respect and accept this. I also encourage others who have narrower views to do the same.

I currently work in a technical support role in Civil Aviation, where most of the systems are now at the trailing edge of technology.

I feel that the Fediverse is a good thing and I hope it succeeds. But I do feel I've been here before with Fidonet and BBSs (bulletin boards), Usenet (internet newsgroups but before they were polluted by the Google Groups interface) and of course #IRC. Big Tech turned the internet into a consumer and business tool and monetised it by capturing the users in their walled gardens (yes, F.., T.., R.., G..,) Some of these I do still use to engage with less tech-savvy family and friends.

Updated to add my Mastodon link

Hello everyone! New to the community. I’m a computational linguist, recently became a parent and am a generally curious being. My interests are technology, and also offline stuff such as home gardening, parenting and inclusivity (I’ve been diagnosed as autistic with ADHD).
