I wonder if the alleged leftists of Lemmy will keep cheering to this.

[–] Zworf 23 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

As a "leftist" why should I cheer for an oppressive oligarchy? That makes no sense.

I think it's very sad what's happening there. And so wrong. LGBTQI people don't harm anyone.

It’s a reference to the fascists on hexbear and their friends, who all call themselves left and make up a large part of Lemmy. For them, left is anything that’s anti-USA.

[–] UngodlyAudrey 5 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Look, we all know that Hexbear is questionable. There's a reason we defederated from them. But let's not go around throwing terms like "fascism" around like they don't mean anything. We all know Hexbear is full of Marxist-Leninist trolls. We know.

[–] FaeDrifter@midwest.social 4 points 11 months ago

I mean, there's also a reason that Marxism-Leninism and Stalinism was historically referred to as "red fascism": Soviet ultra-nationalism, fetishization of violence, authoritarianism. They were very cosy with the Nazis when it came to carving up Poland between them.

Yeah they're internet trolls that picked up the mantle, it's not like they've done the work do deal with their internal issues.

While not everyone agrees, it’s not as if the description of Russia as a fascist state is completely pejorative, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism#Post-Soviet_Russia and the linked Ruscism article.

Aha I have encountered some of those yes. It's why I left lemmy.lm (whose communities seem to be highly participated in by hexbear). I thought they were LGBTQI friendly but I quickly learned otherwise (Especially the T part seemed unwelcome there). I see what you mean by anti-USA too. I like beehaw a lot more so far, thank you.

[–] cwagner 1 points 11 months ago

It’s sadly far wider-spread, it’s why I left the broader fediverse, returned to Reddit, and joined beehaw directly without subscribing to any external communities.

[–] Lowbird 15 points 11 months ago (1 children)

They mean the tankies, of whom there is a large population on Lemmy. They indeed do not make sense.

They're less of them on beehaw than elsewhere. Moreso to be found in lemmygrad and lemmy.ml.

[–] Zworf 4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

Still, I wouldn't understand why a tankie would be supporting today's Russia. There is really no pretense of ideology left. The country is basically run by the mafia whose only ideology is "TAKE". They don't even pretend to be something else anymore.

Arguably the soviet union was like this too. I'm socialist economically (and progressive socially) but I wouldn't consider the soviet union socialist. It was really just a veiled dictatorship.

[–] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 7 points 11 months ago

Because Russia is anti-West, and that's literally all that matters to them. Doesn't matter what Russia, China, North Korea, etc do. The West is evil so they get a pass. Horribly stupid logic.

[–] FaeDrifter@midwest.social 1 points 11 months ago

Tankies tend to be hyper-nationalist. The USSR was hyper-nationalist.

Tankies tend to project their own Soviet ultra-nationalism onto Russia and larp like it's the same thing.

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 25 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

He's talking about the tankies that keep defending a fascist regime with a colonialist imperialistic mindset. My prediction is that either they are raging homophobes themselves like papa Stalin or they will ignore it.

[–] Plume 20 points 11 months ago

These people see the world through: "USA bad". It's the only thing they believe. So if the US criticize a place, like Russia, then it must be good because the US is bad.

Is the US fucking awful? Yes. Is this a completely moronic way of looking at the world? Also yes.

[–] Dislodge3233@feddit.de 16 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

There's also the bizarre phenomena of "leftist" people who support Russia, Iran, etc.

I was on a date once (gay) and he would shit-talk the US, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, etc. for being capitalistic. Then in the same breath, talk about how he wanted to go to Iran and Russia.

I honestly didn't know what to say.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 8 points 11 months ago

The political spectrum a circle. Go far enough around, and it loops back to itself right around fascism and communism. Plus, all the crazy shit like anti-vaxxers and all that bullshit. Killing minorities is a favorite pasttime of both groups, throughout WW2 and the postwar, red/lavender scare era. And it's starting back up again.

[–] Zworf 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Lol, wanting to go to a country that is happy to persecute you for who you are... That's warped.

[–] Dislodge3233@feddit.de 3 points 11 months ago

Yeah it seems to be a series of fallacies like,

Conservatives hate gays, so conservatives are bad. Conservatives love capitalism, so capitalism is bad. The west is mostly capitalistic, so I hate the west. The west sanction Iran and Russia, so they must be good.

I think it's better to draw the line at hating controlling abusive people, rather than geopolitical boundaries.

[–] agarorn@feddit.de 11 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I guess he thinks left=stanilist.

Sounds like people who think that socialism is when the government does stuff.

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 20 points 11 months ago (2 children)

The fact he used the expression alleged, indicates he knows they are actually fascists cosplaying as socialists.

[–] cwagner 11 points 11 months ago

Yeah, exactly. But fascist instances like lemmy.ml ban you for such outrageous statements.

[–] Fitik@fedia.io 2 points 11 months ago

I mean technically tankies are still lefties. (By definition of economical left)

[–] Alto@kbin.social 7 points 11 months ago

Both alleged and the fact that left is italicized really makes me think they're meaning "leftists (air quotes)"

[–] cwagner 11 points 11 months ago

There are a lot of people/instances/admins on lemmy who love everything authoritarian fascist Putin does, but call themselves left.

[–] CabbageRelish@midwest.social 7 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (4 children)

You could actually look and see that it’s firmly condemned.

[–] cwagner 11 points 11 months ago

I avoid visiting fascist sites, I had enough of that when I selfhosted, and before I blocked hexbear, and saw the cheerleading for civilians being bombed in Ukraine. But good to know they are not totally lost.

[–] Templa 6 points 11 months ago

People in the commends saying they miss the URSS like it used to be better then? What lol

[–] FaeDrifter@midwest.social 3 points 11 months ago

You could actually look and see that it’s firmly condemned.

Yeah but I'm doomer lolling so hard at the "is this brand new or was Russia always queerphobic".

We've been warning about this for years, but they've been way too busy being too edgy and contrarian to notice.

[–] LegionEris@feddit.nl 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Why can't I see any comments there? I can see the posts, but it says they all have 0 comments?

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

One of you is defederated from the other.

[–] LegionEris@feddit.nl 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Shit. That's what I was afraid of. I guess feddit.nl isn't the perfect neutral it once was. I specifically chose a home instance that would allow me to access Hexbear and some of the other more extreme instances. Is there a decent migration tool? I am established on this account and am a mod on a few communities. I don't want to lose Hexbear or all my posts and positions.

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I'm on my mobile so it's difficult to tell as the instances list is so large on feddit.nl, but I don't think your instance is blocking hexbear. It looks like hexbear has an allowed list of instances and it's not a large list.

The best bet would be to create an account on hexbear if you want to follow it closely, but keep your existing account.

[–] LegionEris@feddit.nl 1 points 11 months ago

I don't want to follow closely, just occasionally dive in for fun perspective spectating. But maybe you're on the right path with the Hexbear allow list. I should see if I can get Hexbear to allow feddit.nl.

Russia outlaws ‘international LGBT public movement’ as extremist - 30 Nov 2023 - The Guardian

Russia’s supreme court has outlawed what it called an “international LGBT public movement” as extremist, in a landmark ruling that representatives of gay and transgender people warn will lead to arrests and prosecutions of the already repressed LGBTQ+ community.

Human rights activists have said the vague wording of the ruling that targets the “international LGBT public movement” allows Russian authorities to persecute any individual or organisation it considers to be part of the “movement”.

“Even though there is no such thing as an international LGBT movement, it is clear that all legal activities of LGBT organisations will be impossible in Russia,” said Igor Kochetkov, the head of the rights group Russian LGBT Network.

Click here to see the summaryPolice in Moscow have raided several gay clubs, local media report, a day after Russia's Supreme Court moved to outlaw the "LGBT movement".

Club goers were briefly held and their passports were photographed during the raids late on Friday, Telegram channel Ostorozhno Novosti said.

"In the middle of the party, the music was stopped, and [police] began going into the lounges", one eyewitness told the outlet, adding that foreigners were also present at the gathering in central Moscow.

The raids came a day after Russia's Supreme Court declared what it described as the "LGBT public movement" an extremist organisation and banned its activities across the country.

In recent years the country's LGBT community has come under increasing pressure from the authorities, says the BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Moscow.

Earlier this month, one Russian TV channel discoloured a rainbow in a South Korean pop video, to avoid being accused of violating the "gay propaganda" law.
