Can confirm, I can't find a large amount of communities from lemmy.world nor read the already existing comments inside their threads if I enter them manually.

I've tried Mastodon briefly years before but I just couldn't find a reason to stay. No meaningful community on the instance I tried. It kind of put me off the Fediverse for very long because why bother when all the 10 people joining will be the same kind of internet dweller? Lemmy nowadays seems to be filling up fast with Reddit people paving the way for further migration. I'm hopeful for it to thrive now. Instance load issues are a problem and everyone making their communities on lemmy.ml or beehaw.org is an issue and they should be more spread to other lemmy instances, after all we can participate on all of them as long as we federate.

That's because the Lemmy webapp focuses on being lean and functional rather than shoving as much telemetry and megabytes of JavaScript bloat as they can to do LESS than the old Reddit webapp could while using 10-20 times MORE resources.

New Reddit is not completely unusable on an intermittent, crammed full 3G connection where Old Reddit just works, but is known to be actively user hostile and somehow cramming full a huge 1080p phone display with only 2 or 3 comments and having to preload for hours for a full thread.

Lemmy server is also blazing fast and being written in Rust which encourages memory safety does help it function better on smaller instances and serve both local and federated clients faster despite having less resources to do so. I really really hope this replaces Reddit in the mainstream and people learn basic concepts about federated media to future proof the free Internet.

It has been a real breath of fresh air and so far it seems more sustainable to spread the bandwidth between smaller instances than let a megacorp fund the infrastructure to serve everyone in a walled garden which will later be enshittified into garbage once a critical mass is already lured in.

At least Lemmy doesn't employ secret proprietary algorithm pitting, ad injection, dark patterns to funnel people to the bloated battery draining mobile app, shadowbanning or session tracking techniques. Even if I disagree with the politics of this instance I do appreciate a space to actually discuss without corporate interference in a federated platform. I really really hope this kicks in.

The fun thing is that even 2014 Reddit seems like a civilized, egalitarian place with all the things you need to thrive and not worry compared to today or even 5 years ago. Enshittification has been hitting Reddit really hard.

IDK...On one hand, we lose a repository of content and information. On the other hand, people will move to federated, non-megacorp-controlled/ran places like the Lemmy federation and safeguard our future. I'm personally excited if it means priming the pump for a mass migration to the Fediverse as a household name. However Reddit was the sole savior of enshittified Google Search since like 2017, and if it goes away that means Google Search will also stagnate heavily. People usually migrate from proprietary service 1 to proprietary service 2 so I really really hope people keep flocking to Lemmy despite the excessive load concerns. lemmy.ml and beehaw should close registrations at some point to distribute the load more evenly though

Agree, Reddit itself is unusable without old design.

The enshittification of Reddit has been evident ever since the new design rolled out. Unusable on mobile devices. Does less, using more memory and bandwidth.
