!greater_sudbury@lemmy.ca is actually the 2nd or 3rd oldest city-based community on lemmy.ca . It's not very active, but should definitely be added to this list.

Also, !canadasoccer@lemmy.ca would be a good community to add to the soccer category.

For team-specific Canadian-based soccer teams, there's !torontofc@lemmy.ca of the MLS (US-league with 3 Canadian-based teams). Other MLS sides include Vancouver Whitecaps and CF Montreal, which I don't think have a community created.

None of the 8 Canadian Premier League teams, nor any of the numerous League1 Canada sides have taken steps to establish their communities yet (as far as I know).

Peertube is the Fediverse equivalent. It needs more content, and more instances to host said content, but it's a good start.

Good stuff. I love how it's grown and look forward to seeing more voices discuss the issues that arise.

I'm working on growing !greater_sudbury@lemmy.ca myself, and have tried to limit to 1 or 2 posts per day, just to keep them coming and leave openings for other locals to step in, but without the same kind of response.

Perhaps I'm the one that needs to take on a more aggressive seeding technique...

@gtre@lemmy.ca

I don't have an issue (I was replying to the previous post), especially as I do see value in seeding a community with posts. An empty community is a dead community.

However, it may be of more benefit to spread them out. After all, this is all federated. So anyone following the community from elsewhere (my prior reply was from a Mastodon account), they will receive a big wall of posts from this community all at once, but if they were to log in later in the day, they would see nothing (as it all posted earlier).

It would also allow other people to post something themselves and start a conversation in the post, as opposed to just an unexamined link.

Some might also see it as an attempt at spamming or karma farming (even though that no longer translates). Perhaps those thoughts may be something to consider.

Sounds good. Keep up the good work!

Residential school deniers tried to dig up suspected unmarked grave sites at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, not believing a May 2021 announcement from the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc that as many as 215 Indigenous children had been buried there, according to a new report.

They're just over 2.7k right now, probably be over 3k by end of day.

I wouldn't expect our 1.1k to balloon nearly as quickly, but it will be nice to snag more Canadians from the reddit-exodus.

I included wrestling because it always seems like they're hitting each other in their sportsballs whenever I bother to tune in. ;)

This kind of gatekeeping is why Arsenal is more popular that Spurs across North America...

Atletico Ottawa (Canadian Premier League), followed by Tottenham Hotspur.

Rumours are pretty strong that I'm about to get a local club in League2 Ontario, so they'll end up taking over the #1 spot in my support & knocking the other teams down a spot.

--

I realize Canadian soccer is going to be exceptionally niche here, so I'll give a quick layout for the majority of people who are completely unfamiliar.

For men's soccer:

The top of the USA "Pyramid" is Major League Soccer, which has 3 franchises in Canada.

The Canadian "Pyramid" has the Canadian Premier League as our 1st division, and no 2nd division (plans are for CanPL to split at 16-teams). Our 3rd division is a series of separate leagues under the League1 Canada label (Ligue1 Quebec, League1 Atlantic, League1 Alberta, League1 BC, League1 Ontario). Starting in 2024, League1 Ontario is splitting into 3 leagues (L1O Premier, L1O Championship, and L2O) with promotion & relegation. Below that are various youth/amateur leagues.

For women's soccer:

League1 Canada has women's teams as well. They also occupy the 3rd division position.

A pro-division (Project 8) is currently being developed for a 2025 launch.

How our national women's team has remained so competitive, is something of a mystery.

It's looking increasingly likely that a League2 Ontario franchise will be setting up shop in Sudbury, with kick-off in 2024.

We're looking for more people to get involved in setting up a supporters group to cheer on the team as they work toward promotion to the L1O Championship, L1O Premiership, and for eventual qualification to compete against Pro teams in the Canadian Championship for a spot in CONCACAF Champions League.

More info on the site. Help us build our identity so we're ready to launch when the team is announced.

From the event's site:

What Is SolPunk??

Solpunk22 is a gathering for anyone interested in creating anything solarpunk with others!

Well, what does that actually mean? Is it an un-conference, is it a festival, is it just some punks in a field? We don't know yet, but a wise guess is that punks here are interested in many of the following things:

Lowtech and community tech, Energy reduction and renewables, sharing resources, temporary nomadic community, dancing, alternative economy, creating a just future, hackathons, dumpster diving, opensource hardware, software and production, means of care and solidarity, community

There was a Solpunk gathering last year, held at the grounds of the Myselium Collective, with workshops about solar panels, scuttlebutt/fediverse, edible wild plants, contact dancing, utopian thinking, dumpster diving, psychedelics, planetary meditations, local alternative history, starlight rave dancing and more and all the connections and meetings happening in between it all.

A great opportunity to learn, experience and share. So bring your projects, make a workshop!

3-6 years and the Northlander, connecting Cochrane, Timmins, North Bay through to Toronto will be operational once again. The train was shut down in 2012, and its return with 14 stops will provide a vital transportation artery between Northern & Southern Ontario, while also connecting to the Polar Bear Express, which has a terminus at Moosonee in the Far North.

The reinstatement of the Northlander is a great first step in building the necessary transportation infrastructure across Northern Ontario. Hopefully, we'll see further expansion including a Timmins - North Bay - Sudbury - Sault Ste Mare - Timmins loop, and a more frequent connection between the NE & NW communities.

Despite previous transportation plans sitting untouched on the shelves of government, yet another task forth is being put together to do the same thing, yet again.

As in previous plans & task forces, the focus remains on trucks & highways, ignoring existing rail infrastructure that could be remediated, repaired, and expanded.

Considering the University's ongoing obstinance throughout the bankruptcy proceeding, I would be very surprised if the university even exists in the next 5 years.

With the University of Sudbury pushing to become certified, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine now spun off as its own University, and both Cambrian College & College Boreal holding their own, hopefully something can be done for the new school of Architecture that was winning awards prior to the Laurentian debacle.

The Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury is a grassroots group of citizens and community groups who share a vision of Sudbury as a green, healthy and engaged community. Over 1400 people have pledged their support for this vision.

The linked URL leads to a list of member organizations that locals can volunteer & get involved with to help make that vision a reality.
