i found this little guy hanging around and brought it to a safe place as i was digging around

Wowza! All our mantids this year were way smaller than that

They come in all sizes and colors yes! It might be that the variety living in my area (Southwestern Germany) - mantis religiosa - is slightly bigger than average.

I love them so much, it's always a wonderful moment when I spot one, and it was the first time I could hold one.
