I came across the stickied weekly thread at uBlock Origin's sub-Reddit. WARNING: It's a long and complicated read.

The TL;DR takeaway is thus (especially for those who use Firefox):

  1. Click the uBlock Origin icon on Firefox's menu bar
  2. You'll see a three-gear icon at the bottom right. Click this to open the dashboard.
  3. Click the "Purge all caches" button at the top.
  4. Click the "Update now" button at the top.

Note: You may have to do this several times per day since YouTube keeps changing their anti-adblock scripts. However, the diligent work, from all the volunteers at uBlock Origin, have been able to keep pace. I haven't seen any ads NOR any anti-adblock warnings in the past 48 hours.

The original post I made about this is here.

At first, I implemented the uBlock Origin method, recommended by @salarua@sopuli.xyz, and it seemed to work at first.

Today, I got another Anti-Ad blocker message and decided to try the method described by @Peekystar@kbin.social and, again, this seemed to work at first.

Later today, neither of these methods work when trying to use YouTube itself. The redirect methods, probably, work fine if you are NOT using YouTube itself.

Does anyone else have another solution?

This just appeared on my screen when visiting YouTube. Yes, I use Ublock Origin. However, what is all of this about? Will I be banned from YouTube if I don't comply?

I don't wanna dive super deep into this, but ever since the news broke it feels like this place has become a hub for shit-flinging from literally everybody about the topic. Sure, I've seen some nuanced opinions and some people attempting to have a normal human conversation, but I just dislike people using this particular instance as the "place to be" to continue this endless flame war. Isn't this counter to the goals of the instance? How many of us come here to argue like children about geopolitics?

Plus, a lot of the people I've seen pointlessly arguing about this have accounts from other instances... I've even seen one person post on their beehaw account, get flak for it, then switch to kbin for no reason.

And at the risk of sounding too conspiratorial, something definitely seems off about a lot of these comments. Maybe it's how a lot just seem to be infodumping. I dunno.

It's only been a few days. Maybe it'll simmer down. But I don't like the direction this is going.

Edit: I'm not recommending we censor political discussion, however in this particular instance I would say it's wise to take a step back and think about what we say to each other

Im looking into possibly starting a community, but what do you think lemmy needs added? or it it better to do whatever i want? what do you think and please explain dont just reply with one word. Is this the wrong place to post something like this.

things have obviously popped off this week geopolitically so i've been pretty busy trying to bail some people out of very bad decision-making. this has gone mixed to say the least; anyways a lot of people gotta shut the fuck up about geopolitics because there have been 80 unnecessary trillion bad takes this week

I know there's a bit of disconnect by me writing this on an actual social platform, but it's Beehaw - so it's cool.

Lately I've been getting away from Facebook again. I have friends and family on there who are sharing less than savory thoughts. Thoughts of fear, uncertainty, doubt, and even worse: the fettid stench of hatred. I went on there and decided to try and rationalize through status updates, but found myself becoming more frustrated, more angry myself.

I took a break from it the last couple of days and I feel better now. I've shared a couple of articles, but only articles of interests within tech and creativity. I felt like I'm landing a lil bit.

But now I made the mistake of accidentally pressing a notification on my phone... from Twitter (and no, I refuse to call if "X").

I was lead right to a post where some of my countrymen were snarling at a news article where some politicians were praising certain Palestinians who were fighting for their freedom from oppression and apartheid. The thread was full of videos from certain terrorist groups in Palestine unrelated to the actual people being praised, along with irrelevant subjects about battery manufacturing and green energy.

I'd just like to say that despite the crazy things my friends and family have said, even the crazy things I've said, does not have the same pure hatred that I read from that thread. I felt my anxiety bluster up as I mustered the gumption to reply, stating that I wondered why they were sharing videos of people who had suffered apartheid and persecution and blatantly ignoring what the state of Israel has been doing.

I'm now considering just deleting Twitter altogether, as I really don't use it that much. I used it only for a couple of choice accounts from good people who say wholesome things, but I've noticed that their updates don't show up anymore. I feel like Musk is monetising all the worst parts of human behaviour and that scares the ever loving crap out of me.

Say what you will about Facebook, and I'm very critical of Meta and Zuckerberg myself, but doesn't Zuckerberg seem a tad more... adjusted? Even though Facebook has been caught funneling people into extremist echo chambers I don't think I've ever seen anything as bad as what I'm seeing on Twitter right now.

I have friends and family who swear that social platforms in them selves is the source of the toxicity that is found on them, but as we can see on certain federated platforms (with strict CoC's of course) that isn't always the case.

Oh sure, we can talk about dark design patterns, micro dopamine feeding through doom scrolling and attention fishing notifications until the cows come home, but I think we all know that the internet - and by extension social platforms - is a big old mirror we hold up to ourselves.

It's like a reflection into our very minds and we don't like what we're seeing. We scream into the mirror at some imaginary antagonist, a sick and twisted being that stares back in disgust, but all we really are seeing is the reflection of ourselves.

Anyways, no point to all this. Just wanted to get that off my chest. I hope you are doing well and that you are treating yourself kindly.

Thanks for reading.

Speaking as a creative who also has gotten paid for creative work, I'm a bit flustered at how brazenly people just wax poetic about the need for copyright law, especially when the creator or artist them selves are never really considered in the first place.

It's not like yee olde piracy, which can even be ethical (like videogames being unpublished and almost erased from history), but a new form whereby small companies get to join large publishers in screwing over the standalone creator - except this time it isn't by way of predatory contracts, but by sidestepping the creator and farming data from the creator to recreate the same style and form, which could've taken years - even decades to develop.

There's also this idea that "all work is derivative anyways, nothing is original", but that sidesteps the points of having worked to form a style over nigh decades and making a living off it when someone can just come along and undo all that with a press of a button.

If you're libertarian and anarchist, be honest about that. Seems like there are a ton of tech bros who are libertarian and subversive about it to feel smort (the GPL is important btw). But at the end of the day the hidden agenda is clear: someone wants to benifit from somebody else's work without paying them and find the mental and emotional justification to do so. This is bad, because they then justify taking food out of somebody's mouth, which is par for the course in the current economic system.

It's just more proof in the pudding that the capitalist system doesn't work and will always screw the labourer in some way. It's quite possible that only the most famous of artists will be making money directly off their work in the future, similarly to musicians.

As an aside, Jay-Z and Taylor Swift complaining about not getting enough money from Spotify is tone-deaf, because they know they get the bulk of that money anyways, even the money of some account that only plays the same small bands all the time, because of the payout model of Spotify. So the big ones will always, always be more "legitimate" than small artists and in that case they've probably already paid writers and such, but maybe not.. looking at you, Jay-Z.

If the copyright cases get overwritten by the letigous lot known as corporate lawyers and they manage to finger holes into legislation that benifits both IP farmers and corporate interests, by way of models that train AI to be "far enough" away from the source material, we might see a lot of people loose their livelihoods.

Make it make sense, Beehaw =(

Howdy y'all! It's October 1st, so make something month has begun. If you would like to participate, post below with what you are planning to do. There's really no rules, you've just got to make something. Every week after this I'll post a thread for weekly updates, and then on the last day of the month a final update post. About a week later we will do a showcase thread, just in case people need some time for finishing touches or to take photos.

Anyway, good luck and I am looking forward to seeing what everyone makes!

Years back, it was more simple. Food, shelter, and water. But now, as technology, advances and people get stressed out more and more from life getting too complicated, needing manuals for almost everything. What do you guys think the bear necessities are now?

Edit: let's make a list for fun.

  • Food

  • Shelter

  • Water

  • Internet access

  • email (?)

  • phone number (?) / mobile phone (?)

  • ID 100 points

  • Love

  • Clothing

  • Hygiene and Healthcare

  • Human connection

  • Basic Education

I'll answer first: One thing that I do that helps my work environment feel a little nicer is I have a stuffed Totoro on my desk, a nice-smelling candle, and a few tasty snacks in my drawer. I also very quietly play video game music or ambience to remind myself of my hobbies that I like 😊

I just started this job, but I'm trying to make myself feel a bit more cozy, since the work can feel a bit heavy sometimes.

Curious what others do to make their environment a little nicer. :)

Howdy y'all! I'm hoping to run a make something month in October either here or in Creative. The idea is that a bunch of people all make something, doesn't matter what, throughout the month. Each week I'll make a post where we can share progress and discuss, and at the end of the month you can post your final creation(s) in a showcase thread. It's kind of like National Novel Writing Month, except you don't have to be writing a novel, and also it's in October! Anyways, if you have any questions or ideas for what you'd like to do, feel free to post them below. I'll make a post on October 1st to formally kick everything off, so make sure you finalize what you hope to do by then!

Here's an interesting question for you, one that many people have asked themselves, asked their parents, teachers, and even asked their Gods: what makes people do what they do? And a lot of people have answered that question with their own interpretations of human nature. I'm sure you've heard many of them before: people are driven by their passions, people want to serve God, people are motivated by rational self interest, or by their commitments to each other.

Allow me to explain how they're all wrong, but on the other hand, sort of right. You've heard other theories, you can hear one more. Here's my theory: people have four core motivations, what I call the four drives. There are two ways of interpreting this, and I posit that the first model is the one most people unconsciously already operate by, even if they don't realise it. The first model I call:

The Moral Compass.

Each choice a person makes will be driven by their individual inclination toward their drives.

Empathy to the west: one's connection to the feelings, thoughts, beliefs and intentions of others, and their reciprocal feelings in kind.

Ego to the east: one's self esteem, self preservation, the recognition of one's abilities and power as an individual.

Reverence to the north: one's respect for abstract social norms, concepts and ideologies; the extent to which one can believe and accept things, take them seriously, and to see them as more important than oneself.

Will to the south: one's ability to affect the world around them, to act upon one's beliefs and desires; one's courage, and capacity to create from one's imagination.

In the compass model, each axis is considered a spectrum with a person placing somewhere along it. For instance, either empathetic, egoistic, or in between. Thus, a person must choose between either being selfish or selfless, and also, either reverent or willful, never both. And each axis represents an inclination between individual and collective; ego represents one's own emotions, and empathy represents the emotions of others; will represents one's own choices, and reverence represents the choices of others.

This means a person's motives can be described by a point on the compass created by these two axes. This represents a zero sum approach to morality, and a conflict between individual and collective which can never be resolved, only periodically brokering compromises.

In summation, the moral compass boils every decision down to a choice between self and others, and this operates on multiple layers; individual vs society; organisation versus industry; country vs rest of the world.

That describes the moral compass, which, as stated earlier, I believe is already internalised in modern society. This, I think can be easily seen in our media, which can be seen as a reflection of the values of society. How many films, books, video games, tv shows and more, can have their central conflict summed up as a battle between individualism and collectivism? A debate between a person who values ego, and a person who values empathy? A fight between a reverent zealot, and a willful lone wolf?

But, more concretely than that, how many times in your own life, have you felt you needed to choose, "are my feelings valid, or are theirs? Are my beliefs true, or are theirs"? And if the contradiction is irreconcilable, a compromise is brokered that gives each not what they wanted, but something "in the middle". This approach inevitably leads to the conclusion, "the truth is somewhere in the middle", with neither getting what they want, and the resentment only festering further.

There is another way to view these four motives, that I think perfectly answers this seeming contradiction. I call it:

The Dual Dialectic:

Whereas the compass model treats each axis as a spectrum between opposing forces, the dialectical approach instead treats each motive as part of a whole.

The compass model resembles a debate between self and society - "which is more valuable, me, or others?" - and thus ends with a winner, or a halfway compromise. This is because debates have a winner, and the winner is always one of the two debating.

A dialectic, instead, takes both views and attempts to find the truth within. In this way, ego and empathy can be taken as two sides of the same coin, halves of a truth. Where a debate ends with a winner and a loser, a person who is right and one who is wrong, a dialectic leaves room for both, or neither, being correct, as the real aim is to find the truth, whether that be thesis (original view) antithesis (opposing view) or synthesis (a new view, which is a mixture).

With this in mind, each axis creates a synthesis from its poles: synthesising ego and empathy, we get collaboration. If you're choosing between yourself and others, you can instead choose both. In helping others, you not only satisfy your ego in proving your power and gaining strength, but you also satisfy your empathy in lessening the suffering of others, and also strengthening them in turn. This means you get what you want, and they get what they want - no compromises. You help them, and they help you, too.

Synthesising reverence and will, we get reason. It takes reason to choose between believing something, and only acting on your own will. And it also takes reason to see when your interests are already aligned with others, or not, and to determine the truth of a belief. It is not simply your own will or others: it is your capacity to discern the truth that truly matters. If one's own will runs contrary to the beliefs of another, then both can use reason to resolve the dispute. Perhaps, on reflection and after reasoned conversation, this will did not in fact violate those beliefs; or, indeed, perhaps it did, and further reasoning finds an unharmful alternative.

And the synthesis becomes complete by synthesising the two results, and creating Reasoned Collaboration. A complete solution for decision making. Person to person, person to society, group to group, in all arenas - collaborate on all matters, reason through all options, strengthening one another and ourselves at every moment, spiraling closer and closer to the truth, because at every step, we are observing and reasoning and experimenting and reflecting upon our decisions.

If I have to sum this all up in one sentence, it is this:

If you are asked to choose between yourself and another, remember: there is always a way to choose both, and anyone that tells you otherwise is trying to sell you a divided world.

So, these were two interpretations of a 4-pointed model of motivation. I hope you found this somewhat interesting, and that I'm not just a pretentious whackjob trying to reinvent the wheel. Only time will tell.

I mostly make videos of my family vacations and such as a hobby.

A distant family member liked my edits, and now wants to hire me to shoot a video of a professional conference. I haven't accepted yet, and I'm reluctant to because I've never done anything on this level before. They're quite desperate because they can't find a "real" videographer for their budget ($500 USD for ~4 hour shoot). Money is not really a concern for me. I'd love to do this job, but I don't want to let them down if something goes wrong.

I only have one camera - Fuji X-T3, and one lens decent enough to possibly work in low-light indoor setting - Sigma 16mm f/1.4. I'm worried about data loss since even though the X-T3 has dual SD Card slots, it only writes video to one of them. I also don't own any lighting equipment aside from a GoDox flash (not even a remote trigger for it). I do have a gimbal for stabilization, but very little experience actually filming with it. And of course the fact that they're extended family complicates things even further.

Not sure what else I should be worried about. Should I bite the bullet and take the job? I'll be up-front with the client about both my (lack of) experience and limited equipment, of course.

All the time I have people come in to work wearing a mask, which is fine normally, good for them, but they are wearing them on their chin, chin diaper style. Not covering up anything. Or at best just their mouth, sometimes. Nobody is making these people wear a mask anymore, so why are they doing it at all if they are just going to do it wrong? Is it an attempt at a political statement? A lack of education? I end up baffled for a while every time I see one of these people.
