Sentient, spacefaring bees, according to the article! Not what I was expecting but still, sounds pretty intriguing!

You had me at spacefaring bees.

You had me at Stonemeyer Games. Jamey's right up there with Isaac Childres and Wehrle&Ferrin when it comes to guaranteed purchases in this house.

Not a huge fan of Stonemaier. In talking with the designer of wingspan, they were purposely keeping the game scarce to limit the designer profits and try to make a buzz around the game.

Purely out of curiosity, would you happen to have a (news/blog/article etc.) source for this? While not a strict devotee of them, I've always found Stonemaier games to be on the more respectable side of the industry, so this seems somewhat atypical of their approach.

Yeah, I don't know if that tracks. Wingspan has sold more than 1.3 million copies (as of September 2021) which is way way way more than the average board game sells.

I'd far more believe that they couldn't keep up with production than they were intentionally limiting supply.

I am guessing that it may be referring to this. Note that the post is on the Stonemaier site so it's their side of the story. Some searching also turned up a later analysis in a BGG thread.

In a hindsight given the extremely wide distribution, HUGE number of copies sold and many followup products all of this doesn't seem very relevant.
