im using a Samsung a53 5g, its pretty good i like it but i really dont need the 3 cameras

A home on LW for Android users.
RULES
While this is s community focused on Android, some of us have devices from the Android, Apple, Windows and Linux worlds, etc. We may prefer Android, but overzealous and obsessive adherence to Android as some sort of infallible platform won't be tolerated long here.
That said, being critical of brands is fine. Android is frustrating in some ways, just like iOS and so forth. Let's be upfront about that.
Be thoughtful and helpful, even with 'stupid' questions. Otherwise, as ya mama said, say nothing at all. The world won't be made better or worse by snarky dudes schooling naive newcomers on Lemmy.
S20 FE user here. Pretty solid phone for the price I paid like almost 2 years ago. It's still great and works marvelously for my usage.
Only downside I would say is custom ROM support, as there's no working one and device support is about to end.
Yeah, I have an S20 FE and honestly it's just great. It is more powerful than the cost implies, and it still holds up pretty well for anything shy of super intensive apps.
I'm using the S10+. I'm happy with it, but it's my first curved phone and I've been having the worst luck getting a screen protector on it that doesn't start lifting because I can't get them on the screen perfectly lined up. Other than that, not much to complain about. I've had a couple of Samsung phones before this one, On5 being the worst. I upgrade maybe every 5 years but I hate the design of the newer phones and want to keep this one for longer. Only have used android phones and only use windows as well.
Pixel 6a. Was using pixel 4 before I washed it with my trouser, best phone I have owned. I miss headphone jack. I don't have any Apple products other than a iPad.
Pixel 6 Pro. Got it at release to replace my Pixel 3a XL. I have pixel buds Pro to go with it and a garmin watch. Prior to my Pixels I had Honor View 10, LG G2, Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S2, Taco Lite.
I do have an iPad Pro 10.5 (2017) which I primarily use for video calls.
I imagine my next phone will be a Pixel again because I've come to appreciate much of the features. I do have to use a 3rd party launcher (microsoft launcher) because I hate google search being forcibly baked in and the news page being much worse than Microsoft Launcher's news or 'at a glance' pages
I'm using a Google Pixel 6a.
I am very happy with it. Price makes it unmatched in my eyes, although the battery could be better.
Before this I had a Pixel 4XL which had awful battery life, but was still a major upgrade from my old Samsung galaxy S3. I have only upgraded because I've got a "problem reading your battery error" and replacing the battery didnt solve it.
I very very rarely upgrade and just use custom ROMS to expand the life of each of my old phones, building my own ROMs in necessary.
For everything else, I'm a ThinkPad T480 guy running Debian or Ubuntu. That being said I use a MacBook for work and she runs beautifully.
Pixel 4a here. Been running fine for the most part. I do want to upgrade eventually because I like newer shiny tech but what's holding me back is losing the fingerprint reader on the back. My wife has a 6a and loves it (I do too) but the hassle of the fingerprint reader is just so off-putting. I've seen the same concerns with a couple other devices with the in screen reader, so we'll see. Might upgrade to the 7a in the future when it's on sale or something.
Have a Pixel 7
For the most part, yes. Love being able to install Calyxos on it, battery life is alright, get 2 days out of it with the occasional top up in between. The 90Hz screen is a nice little upgrade coming from a 60Hz.
Just came from a OnePlus 6T, before that was an iPhone 7, iPhone 5s, iPhone 4 and a Nokia e63 (there was another Nokia before that but don't remember which one). The best one was the OP6T, although they were all great upgrades at the time, loved them all.
Nowadays I hold onto them for as long as possible, the iPhone 7 i had for about a year but sold it to get the OP6T. Had the OP6T for 4 years and the 5s for 3.5yrs (that thing took a beating from high school me).
Nope, none, not a fan of buying into ecosystems.
Don't own any apple products at the moment, the OP6T made me not want to use an iPhone ever again, have owned Macbooks in the past but now I've found that Linux is perfect for me.
S10. It's older, bought refurbished, but probably technically the "best" phone I ever had and it's all I really need tbh.
Recently switched from a OnePlus 3t to a Asus ZenFone 8
OnePlus 9 Pro. Despite Reddit deciding that it's a bad phone because OnePlus bad or some such, I'm actually super satisfied with it.
Poco F3.
What phone are you using? Galaxy S23 Ultra 512GB
Are you happy with it? What are its best and worst qualities? Really happy with it. Got it recently. I love the battery, the screen quality, the camera quality, the speed.
I don't like that the image editing sometimes grabs a different image than the one captured, but it's only when zoomed.
Which phones have you had previously? Which were the best and worst of the lot? I had the S5, S7, S10+, I tried out the iPhone 11 and went back to the S23U.
I liked the S10+ best, and S5 least because it heated and died overnight lol.
How often do you upgrade to a new phone? Not that often. Usually 3-4 years?
What other Android ecosystem devices do you have? Watches, headphones/earbuds, etc. None. The ecosystem is pretty garbage honestly. I have Airpods, and an Amazefit watch with notify firmware.
Do you also use any Apple products, or are you Android all the way? (And/or Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, etc.) I use Windows for gaming, MacOS for laptop, Airpods for headphones. The right tool for the job makes all the difference. :)
Pixel 4a 5g. Overall, still works and performs well enough for what I do.
I did start running into an issue a few months ago where it would just drop signal and have to be rebooted to get service back. I think it may have been after an update and also might have been resolved with a more recent update as last couple weeks it hasn't happened.
It has also survived a couple drops without breaking 😀
What phone are you using? Samsung Galaxy S10
Are you happy with it? What are its best and worst qualities? Yep, still works great, for now. It's one of the smaller of the big phones so it fits better in the pocket.
Which phones have you had previously? Which were the best and worst of the lot? In the modern era, I had been in various iPhones. My wife and kids jumped on the Samsung bandwagon in 2019.
How often do you upgrade to a new phone? Usually every 3+ years.
What other Android ecosystem devices do you have? Watches, headphones/earbuds, etc. We've got Galaxy buds. I also have an Amazon FireTV stick which I think is Android based. I had a Galaxy Tablet years ago.
Do you also use any Apple products, or are you Android all the way? (And/or Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, etc.). My daughter still has an iPad Mini, but that's about it at this point.
Currently: Samsung S21 FE 5G Overall I like it....it's snappy and does what I need. Not a huge fan of OneUI, Samsung's take on Android. Got it for wireless charging mostly. Wireless charging is a required feature for me, and weeds out a lot of phones.
Previous Phones: Motorola Z2 Force - my favorite Android phone, just not fast enough today. Loved the Moto Mods Nexus 6 - Loved it at the time, but became too big for me and went for smaller to follow it. Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S... iPhone 3GS - First and Last iPhone...got tired of jailbreaking to use it the way I wanted to.
My upgrades have mostly been by choice leading up to the Z2 Force. Got them as new ones I liked came out. After that it was out of necessity.
Other Android I use: We have 3 NVidia shields in front of my media center running Emby. I've had a couple of Android SmartWatches, but don't currently have one.
I'm on Windows 10 for my primary PC/Laptop. Linux powers my servers. My dad uses Apple Products, has a iPhone 13 Pro, some iPad, and a Watch 8. I'm his caregiver as he is getting older. Not really looking to switch him as it works for him.
Pixel 6. I'm really happy with it for the most part and have never had any issues with it. My biggest gripe is that the under-screen fingerprint scanner is slower and more inconsistent than the physical ones on the Pixel 3 and 5, but it's not a deal-breaker.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Really love this phone thanks to its display and camera. Also love the form factor and overall design. I wish more phones had sharper corners and had a boxy look like this one, I'm not a fan of rounded corners on phones!
My first smart phone was a Samsung S3 (?). I upgraded to a OnePlus 7T--which was an awesome phone. Next was a Pixel 6--which I liked enough to get the 7 Pro the day it was available.
I love it! Reliable, nice photos, good battery life. 👍
Probably won't get the Pixel 8--unless it get's ecstatic reviews or something. Will likely upgrade to the Pixel 9 when it comes around.
What phone are you using?
Pixel 6A in the yellow/green (?) colorway
Are you happy with it? What are its best and worst qualities?
Very. I've enjoyed (most of) Google's devices since the Nexus days, and the Pixel line continues to satisfy. The 6A for me has great battery life and is just the right size in the hand. It's getting harder and harder to find a reasonably small device, so I'm glad Google is still keeping that going (for now). There are a few software quirks that really, really annoy me. I'm STILL angry that Google took away the On/Off/On If Silent universal switch for vibration, and I think the quick settings tiles in the Pixel launcher are ugly as sin.
Which phones have you had previously? Which were the best and worst of the lot?
So, so many. Started my smartphone journey with a Blackberry Curve 8310, then I was team iPhone from the 3G up to the 6S. I bounced around from OEM to OEM in the wild west days of Android devices, usually preferring HTC. Probably my favorite phone ever was the HTC One M8. My favorite recent device was the Z Fold 3.
How often do you upgrade to a new phone?
When I either get bored, or something compelling enough comes out. Otherwise every 2-3 years.
What other Android ecosystem devices do you have? Watches, headphones/earbuds, etc.
Pixel Watch LTE, Pixel Buds Pro, Samsung Galaxy Tab S8. I really wish someone besides Sammy would make a decent US market Android tablet. We'll see how the Pixel tab goes.
Do you also use any Apple products, or are you Android all the way? (And/or Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, etc.)
Android all the way. Personal computer is Zorin OS, work PC is Windows 11.
Motorola Edge 30 Pro (aka Motorola Edge+ 2022 for the North Americans here), which I got back in early November last year. I did research for a while before buying it (and got it with a huge discount) and I'm mostly happy with my purchase, it's a nice phone with a clean near-stock Android experience (although I've since changed launcher to Kvæsitso) and it's extremely fast, although I must say I'm not a heavy smartphone user.
Worst things are that the Android 13 update took nearly three months long than planned to come (and here in Italy apparently we were among the first to get the update) and Motorola is not that fast with security updates; while the only really annoying thing is that sometimes it stops the internet connection usually after giving the command to download/update apps, whether from the Play Store or from F-Droid; the connection somehow is still there as it's enough to cancel and tell do download/update again and everything works.
This is my first Android phone: my first smartphone was a Nokia X6 running Symbian which I got in 2011 and then I used iPhones for a decade (while having been a Mac user all the time), first an iPhone 5C in 2013 and then an 8 Plus which I got in 2018. Clearly the newest was the best of the bunch as it was a quite major upgrade from the 5C, which in turn came when Symbian was an abandoned OS; the last two phones both lasted me just short of five years, and I changed back in November mainly because I could hand it down (refurbished) to my mom, otherwise I would have waited perhaps another year.
This time I decided to leave iOS for good as I was increasingly unsatisfied and worried with Apple's walled garden ecosystem - for the same reason I had already left macOS for Linux back in 2020 (never had any other Apple products nor subscriptions except for a few iPods over the years) - and even after the novelty has worn off I vastly prefer Android. Right now I have this Android phone and my laptop I'm writing from, which only runs Linux, specifically EndeavourOS, although my old 2009 iMac still works - thanks to a SSD swap back in '17, although it hasn't gotten newer updates since High Sierra - and I tinker with it from time to time. At work I use Windows 10... but that's not my choice.
Galaxy S10e. I love the small size of it and the fact that it still has a microSD slot and headphone jack. Its starting to show its age when it comes to battery life and the USB C port not working as good.
I like the Samsung android software with the customization that you get with Good Lock so I will probably stick with Samsung flagship for my next phone. The biggest thing I dislike with Samsung is the amount of bloatware they ship, the out of box experience is terrible and I usually have to spend a day researching what apps to disable with adb to get the phone usable. I will probably upgrade to an S23 next year. I usually buy my phones used when the model has been out for about a year. At a year old its still new enough to have plenty of support left, but its no longer the current model so it sells for less. Its a better value IMO then buying a new mid range phone, especially as there isn't as much advancement year to year in hardware these days. A year old flagship will have better cameras than a new mid range phone typically.
Samsung Galaxy S20.
Pretty happy with it. I just wish it wasn't a glass back. I have already shattered in even with a beetle case on.
I have previously used an S8, and a window's phone (forgot the model). The windows phone wasn't that great because i couldn't use most of the apps I wanted to use. It was decent though for its price since I needed it primarily for call + texting.
I upgrade usually once software updates and security updates are no longer supported on the phone.
I have an iPad and a macbook. Apple has a very nice hardware but I dont think i'll ever use iOS as my daily driver though.
4XL, works great still
Only regret is not getting the larger, 128gb model
What phone are you using?
Xiaomi Note 10 Pro
Are you happy with it? What are its best and worst qualities?
For the most part, yes! It's got an extremely good price to performance ratio and has great battery life, great high resolution screen. But it's got some extremely annoying bugs... For instance, sometimes it just randomly reboots, or worse yet, turns off and then takes several minutes to boot. There's seemingly no discernible pattern to it. Sometimes the touch screen seems to get jittery as well, although it doesn't majorly affect usability. Some recent update also messed up apps colors for certain elements, so yeah, not great software wise. If it wasn't for the rather major issue with crashing I would have no problem recommending it wholeheartedly though.
Which phones have you had previously? Which were the best and worst of the lot?
I had a Redmi phone before that, before that I had an iPhone SE, iPhone 5, 4 etc. The Redmi phone was great for the price, similar to this one. The SE was also great, but all of my iPhones died in the same, bizarre way. They all started to crash with weird black and white stripes, eventually becoming unusable because of frequent crashing.
How often do you upgrade to a new phone?
When the old one breaks, basically!
What other Android ecosystem devices do you have? Watches, headphones/earbuds, etc.
None that I would call "ecosystem"y. It's all intercompatible.
Do you also use any Apple products, or are you Android all the way? (And/or Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, etc.)
Windows as desktop OS.
Haha, sounds like you're a pragmatic and financially responsible person! Good on you. We have very little in common. 😂
You must be extremely patient though, I'd have thrown any phone out the window if it crashed even remotely often!
OnePlus 9 5G. Prior that, OnePlus 7T, OnePlus 3, and three BlackBerry OS phones.
Asus ROG Phone 5. Damn powerful, perfectly shaped for movies, I can play Wii and PS2 games!
Still using my Pixel 2xl from 2018! Longest time with a single phone ever. Still working pretty well but showing signs of the inevitable end of life.
Recently got a Samsung Galaxy S22. Pretty bummed about the lack of headphone jack, since my previous Samsung had one.
Pixel 7 user here, battery could be better but that's about it - super satisfied otherwise. Also have the pixel buds pro, and use a Mac + iPad (although I'd take a look at the pixel tablet if I didn't). Super satisfied!
Used to use Samsung Galaxy S22, and there's a lot of small software features missing there which added up. Ex: volume control for cast device did not work on samsung (had to control volume manually from the app rather than volume buttons). All the calling features (call screen, hold for me, etc), astrophotography, slow camera shutter speed (on default settings), and general UI/UX I prefer on Pixel over Samsung.
I currently have a iPhone 13 Pro. One thing I really enjoy about it is the battery life. I used android up until my freshman year of college in 2016.
I kept an htc one m8 in case I wanted to sell my iPhone or something happened to it. That was a great phone, I don’t remember where it is though.
I have an Apple Watch and AirPods and MacBook. I actually just ordered a Samsung tablet. I just made a post about it if you wanna check it out!
My iPhone is glitchy as hell though for real. It’s really annoying
Haha, I was about to ask what brought you to this c if you're an Apple user, but the new tablet explains it. I'll have a read of that! I love my Tab S8.
samsung note 9 with iodéOS. i'm quite happy with it. i must say samsung's os had too many bloatware and i was unable to delete them.
A Samsung Galaxy A50. It's an old midranger but it holds up well enough to this day.
Nothing Phone 1.
For a mid-range phone, it's fantastic. Really would recommend it.
Sony Xperia 1 III.
Bought it used a few months ago. It checks all the boxes I want in a phone (notification LED, headphone jack, no notch, expandable memory) so I'm satisfied with it, but it took some tinkering to get it to behave the way I wanted it to. Setting a specific notification color/pattern wasn't supported in settings so I had to use GravityBox to do that, same with swapping the back and recent buttons and a whole assortment of minor things. In particular, the physical Google Assistant button was useless to me and required even more of a workaround, but in the end I managed to make it a flashlight toggle instead.
Previously, I used a OnePlus 6. Loved the phone but its battery was on the way out. Before that was a ZTE Axon 7, which I wasn't overly fond of (only used it for a year and a half and I usually only buy new phones when forced to from battery issues) but bought as a stopgap after my beloved OnePlus 1 grew too dated and ran into battery issues. Before that was my first phone, a Galaxy SIII.
