i use an old cellphone with the radios disabled. throw a big old microsd card in and youre good to go.

I would also do that but sadly I do not have any spare phone and my phone has no sd card slot

Some of the old LG phones (the V series) were known and sold for the quality of their audio. If you can find one of those on eBay it should be pretty cheap.

I agree with this. I have one that I have kept for the audio. I loaded a 512 Gb card it it and it is perfect. Now i just need to seriously expand my music collection.

If you're in the USA, best buy might have a returned low end phone, Moto's often have SD slots.

Sadly, Android does not have a good folder player tgat does FLAC, so VLC is it.

I used to use Mortplayer on Android for years which played FLACs and used folders well. I don't know the current state of the app, but it might be worth looking into.

Obtanium couldn't find that one.

I am not in the US. I don't like to buy second hand smartphone in my country. It is either overpriced or straight up junk, be it in the local equivalent of craiglist or in specialized store. However, It is the solution I would prefer if I can get a spare phone from someone I know (given or bought). But I have not been lucky yet. Most people I know use their phone untill they stop working or there is no sd card.

I use a Sony NW-A55 walkman. It is one of the latest models of digital audio players that doesn't use Android. It has a microsd slot, supports flac, bluetooth, and no internet connectivity. The japanese models are still available new on ebay, you just have to change the language on the player to english.

I love it.

I use the Kickstarter version of the Mixxtape. My wife uses the newer version, which offers some improvements.

It's fantastically retro, but you will need to use a micro-SD.

[–] hanabatake@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hahaha, this is hilarious and actually pretty cheap

[–] Grimpen@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Love mine, but the newer version that my wife has is just a little bit better all around. Plus the extras it comes with are a pure nostalgia hit.

[–] zod000@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ok, wait, so this thing also works as an actual cassette? That's so hilariously awesome I might get it purely for that gimmick.

[–] Grimpen@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes… in the cassette players that work with those adapters. Annoyingly, the old stereo we have set up at work in one shop doesn't work with those casette adapters or the Mixxtape.

Also, if you use it in a tape deck, it doesn't use the spools as inputs. You just set it playing and pop it in. Similar to my old Digisette Duo Aria.

I will admit, I have rarely used the tape deck function, but it has been useful on occasion.

[–] zod000@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Thanks, so it is probably hit and miss on that feature, but I'd also probably rarely use it. I still might pick this up as it looks very cool.

[–] Grimpen@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

If you can get one of those cassette adapters, you can test the tape deck of interest first.

Technology Connections on YouTube had an episode on those tape adapters, but I can't remember the reason why she some tape decks don't work with those cassette adapters.

So far I've only had that one tape deck not work.

Ipod Classic, Silver, but without mods it can't read FLAC I believe.

[–] hanabatake@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Sadly ipod cannot read flac. It is possible to convert to apple lossless file format

I am currently rocking a Shanling M2X which I bought secondhand for €75,- from the local classified ad websites.

Officially supports up the 512Gb but according some reviews it can do up to 2Tb microSD cards ( https://headfonics.com/shanling-m2x-review/ ). I currently have a music collection of about the same size. The Shanling M2X can drive all the IEMs I throw at it, has enough file system support to read just about anything and has WiFi and Bluetooth. Although the WiFi can only be used to wirelessly sync files (which can be a pro but also a con, depending on how you look at it).

However if you don't feel like going secondhand, Shanling offers a whole bunch of devices meant for offline playback of local files.

I had to get a player without any internet access or camera awhile back to use while working with confidential information, and ended up getting a 2nd Generation Fiio X3. Was a bit expensive, but was the most recommended for the price at the time, was a lot cheaper than the Sony, B&O and Astell+Kern it was compared with in reviews, and still works well years later. I just use a microSD card reader to update it, there's a driver to install if you want to use it as a DAC otherwise it's not needed

[–] hanabatake@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

Thanks ! I will check all that :)

Either dig up an old iPod (flash-modding would be a good idea, as 300+GB iPods are rarer) and put Rockbox on it for FLAC support, or dig up an old phone or something and get a decent USB-C adapter/DAC.
