Rules

  1. Be nice to each other. Being aggressive or inflammatory towards other users will get you banned. Name calling or obvious trolling falls under that. Hate cars, hate the system, but not people. While some drivers definitely deserve some hate, most of them didn't choose car-centric life out of free will.

  2. No bigotry or hate. Racism, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, homophobia, chauvinism, fat-shaming, body-shaming, stigmatization of people experiencing homeless or substance users, etc. are not tolerated. Don't use slurs. You can laugh at someone's fragile masculinity without associating it with their body. The correlation between car-culture and body weight is not an excuse for fat-shaming.

  3. Stay on-topic. Submissions should be on-topic to the externalities of car culture in urban development and communities globally. Posting about alternatives to cars and car culture is fine. Don't post literal car fucking.

  4. No traffic violence. Do not post depictions of traffic violence. NSFW or NSFL posts are not allowed. Gawking at crashes is not allowed. Be respectful to people who are a victim of traffic violence or otherwise traumatized by it. News articles about crashes and statistics about traffic violence are allowed. Glorifying traffic violence will get you banned.

  5. No reposts. Before sharing, check if your post isn't a repost. Reposts that add something new are fine. Reposts that are sharing content from somewhere else are fine too.

  6. No misinformation. Masks and vaccines save lives during a pandemic, climate change is real and anthropogenic - and denial of these and other established facts will get you banned. False or highly speculative titles will get your post deleted.

  7. No harassment. Posts that (may) cause harassment, dogpiling or brigading, intentionally or not, will be removed. Please do not post screenshots containing uncensored usernames. Actual harassment, dogpiling or brigading is a bannable offence.

Please report posts and comments that violate our rules.

If only cargo bikes like the one in the picture didn't cost as much as a small car

[–] tavu@sopuli.xyz 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

They're a little pricey I suppose, but judging by a few minutes comparing gumtree listings for hatchback cars and cargo bikes:

< 20% the cost of a hatchback in analogous condition/age/fanciness.

[–] ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

To be clear, I was explicitly talking about cargo bikes like the one in the video thumbnail.

It was a lamentation that the specific style of bike I want, that is featured in that video, is so expensive.

It wasn't a meta commentary on total cost of ownership, or cargo bikes in general.

Yeah, I agree that there aren't many budget cargo-in-front options yet (none that I could find in 5 sec of googling).

Compared to used car prices, unfortunately there are not many used cargo bikes. I think the cheapest new option would be like the unfinished project I'm riding, which is fine on small hills or if you don't mind working hard sometimes, top assist speed 15mph (+~$500 more = moar⚡)

$3k acoustic supercargo, 440lb max load yubabikes.com/cargobikestore/supercargo/
+ $570 tiny 250W 190Wh #eBike wheel ➕ torque arm hilltopperbikes.com/product/sprinter-12-mile-24v-electric-bike-kit-copy/

@agegamon @ada there are also trikes in that price range like from lectric and radpower, which could be a good option for a lot of people but your top speed on that is more like 12 even downhill, so you don't tip over. If you're going slower, the trike can be easier to manage a big load, but bakfiets are great at 12-20mph 30 if you like wind.

@agegamon For a budget option, there’s the rare mid-loader back-to-back tandem design with plenty of storage between the riders.

The primary frame is made from a custom bent exhaust pipe.

Naturally aerodynamic and fast.

@markstos @agegamon Holy chain length, Batman! That might win for longest chain I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some long ones

[–] markstos@urbanists.social 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

@dx @agegamon The Hase Pino tandem has a massive set of chains because the frame extends in two places. One side of the bike works like a giant derailleur, where the chain may double back almost 3 feet to soak up the slack when the frame is compressed.

[–] enobacon@urbanists.social 1 points 7 months ago

@markstos @dx @agegamon 😂 this kind of thing has me thinking I should just have the kid crank/treddle a generator rather than try to get their power there mechanically

@Andres4NY @agegamon That back-to-back tandem recumbent was designed by Kurt Ritchie in Richmond, Indiana as a one-off. He's an acupuncturist by day who also knows how to weld. The chain crosses over at some point so the stoker can also pedal "forward". There's also a freewheel that allows the stoker to idle if they wish.

Besides the exhaust pipe from, I believe he ordered some chromoly tubing from airplane supply company.

The shape of the bike does make it aerodynamic and fast!

@Andres4NY @markstos @agegamon in NL they are still ( custom) made by ACE in Winterswijk. If you fancy one, I can help link to the place where second hand ones are sold
