Hey folks,

Thought I should post this here in case there are any Berlin people in need of a hyper compact sampler:

https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/1010music-blackbox/2514729335-74-3477

I don't want to ship it because I prefer to keep it local and meet the people I'm selling to. I never have any issues this way as we meet, chat, share phone numbers, and the buyer knows where I live and how to get in touch if there's any issue at all.

😊👍

I got bitten by the bug years ago when I had to get a bass amp repaired under warranty. The closest place turned out to be a bunch of guys that their main business was fixing Hammond's, Wurlis, and other vintage gear. They let me try out everything in the shop! I had no clue how to play anything, but twisting so the knobs and pulling drawbars was all so fun. The Hammond and Moog were my favorite and I wanted to learn more. They were both out of budget and too big and heavy, so I started watching tons of synth videos.

Now it's about 10 years later. Earlier this year, I got a Mark I Rhodes and started learning to play and it's coming along well. It's lots of fun and I'm learning so much. But it's still not filling that void. I want to be able to experiment with sounds and make full songs with multiple layers, but I feel lost from doing so much research before jumping in.

First I wanted an Akai Mini, then the Minilab to experiment with sounds design, then the Keystep for more focus on sequencing, then I saw so many cool videos on the Volca Sample that made it look like it could do everything, but then everyone was saying they outgrew all their Volcas. That lead me to a bunch of things saying to just start with a synth like the Monologue, XD, or the Hydrasynth Explorer. Then I started looking at Circuit Tracks to play the Rhodes over.

At first, I thought starting with a cheap Midi controller and computer would let me play around for not much cash. But now I use my phone or work laptop and don't even have an actual computer to put a DAW on. I like the portability of an actual synth since it doesn't need to computer, but since I'm still a relative noob, I feel going the DAW route would help me finish things since I could cut and paste together. I could still do a controller with some Volcas, but that seems like if need a dedicated space to set everything up.

I'm just so overwhelmed now, and without anyone to learn from, I don't know were to start. I don't have so much an end goal of doing one specific thing, it's mainly about the learning and experimenting. If like to be able to do passable lofi, house, acid, and things I haven't even learned about yet.

I've gone on for too long, both on this post, and deciding what I need to do. Currently have Rhodes>MultiFX>Bass Amp, no computer, no audio interface. What will get me the most fun and education and experimentation from here for <$1000?

I'm still learning about synths, so someone can probably give a better answer for why this was significant. However, here is what I got when I asked GPT:

The Roland TR-808 drum machine, often simply referred to as the "808," holds immense significance in the music world. Introduced in the early 1980s, the 808 synth played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of multiple genres, including hip-hop, electronic, and dance music. Its distinct analog drum sounds, such as the booming bass kick and snappy snare, have become iconic and have had a lasting influence on the sonic palette of contemporary music. The 808's affordability, innovative features, and unique sound led to its adoption by musicians and producers, helping to define the sound of an era and inspiring countless artists to explore new creative avenues.

I want to do fm with the asdr, but even with all potis fully down, the pitch starts high and takes about a second to get down.

Is this broken, is it a quirk of the 2600?

Ideally, I would want it to stay flat if all potis are down.

My intent is to generate a similar effect to the lag but much shorter.

Edit: I tried the same with the Arturia 2600 VST, that one behaves as expected.

So I’ve finally decided to get a real rack and I’m looking for advice on a couple of areas. I will be making drone/dark ambient and I already have a digitakt, 0-Coast and NTS-1. I want the rack to create slowly evolving drones and textures which I can layer with the 0-Coast for fx/bass and the digitakt to play more textures, glitchy fx, or whatever sounds right. I also plan to use VCV for CV modulation and sent to midi which seems to be nice and easy with the Nifty case.

So far I have decided to get the Nifty case and Morphagene, along with FX Aid XL for big reverbs and probably Befaco Out v3. The areas I am undecided about are modulation, distortion, and perhaps utilities.

For modulation, I would like a few different LFOs that I can use with both the rack and with the 0-Coast. I’ve been thinking about Ochd + some kind of mixer because I love it in VCV and it seems hard to beat in terms of separate LFOs and footprint. But then, perhaps Maths might be better? I would get less choice of outputs from it vs Ochd but I could potentially do more with it?

For distortion, I really have no idea. I want it to be stereo in/out as I plan to use it before or after FX Aid but I don’t know what kind of distortion I need for creating filthy distorted pads/drones. I quite like VCV's Debriatus’ saturate and fold sections in VCV. I’ve been looking at Erica Synths Pico DSP since it is small, stereo and could be useful to have other fx when I don’t want distortion. I think I also want it to have some kind of tone/filter to tame it and make it dark.

For utilities, I don’t think I need a great deal, at least for this iteration of the rack. It looks like I can attenuate the inputs on Morphagene and I don’t really need to create envelopes for now, nor do I need sample and hold (although this might be handy later on).

So any advice on modules? I’m also thinking that a stereo mixer with a few different inputs might be useful so that I can route the digitakt (which will have the 0-Coast running through it) because I only really have a stereo output to my speakers/computer.

Looking for storage solutions. Small cables I've been labelling gallon plastic bags and throwing them in a drawer. I've got a drawer for power cables, a drawer for balanced cables. Instrument cables I have hanging on a coat rack, lol. I feel like there has to be a better way. What do you guys do?

I am offloading a bunch of music gear. If you're in Europe and are interested in any of it, get in touch:

https://www.marktplaats.nl/u/thomas-biesaart/16654962/

  • Drumbrute Impact: € 180
  • MPC Live 2 + Decksaver + SSD: € 750
  • Custom case for 2 electron digi boxes + power supply and cabling: €250

If you feel like sales shouldn't happen on this community, also let me know and I will probably delete my post. We're still looking to find a general consensus.

So I am an absolute sucker for that synthy stringy goodness, and a Streichfett is really sounding like it will scratch that itch for me. Before I pull the trigger on one though, is there anything else that I should consider too? I'm hoping to keep with a smaller footprint but I'm happy to consider all options.

Hi, as the title and free options are equally useful until I can snag a top rated on sale.

It seems like the most highly rated is Phoscyon 2. As I said, if I can get this on sale then great.

But what else do you use regularly that does the job?
