Air Canada is slashing six major routes out of Calgary this winter, in part due to an industry-wide pilot shortage that the carrier says threatens its "overall operational stability."

The country's biggest airline confirmed Wednesday it will no longer offer non-stop flights from Calgary to Ottawa, Halifax, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Cancun, or Frankfurt as of the end of October due to ongoing fleet and crew constraints.

You may have noticed a transformation in several of Calgary’s commercial streets over the past four years. Patios protected by colourful barriers now line some of our trendiest streetscapes. Within these barriers is a story of local art, collaboration, accessibility and safety.

"At the outset of the seasonal patio program in 2020, it began as something more utilitarian – a response to the pandemic and an effort to support small businesses" explains Andrew Sedor, the Mobility Initiatives Lead at The City of Calgary. "Calgarians may remember these same streetscapes once covered with orange cones and barricades, now boasting art covered barriers, protective planters and bike / e-scooter parking platforms".

The evolution of these spaces is thanks to The City of Calgary’s partnership with the Beltline Urban Mural Project (BUMP) and the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts).

There is a set of scammers who have been all over Calgary and nearby towns. They set up at a busy corner and pretend to play an electric violin. They have music playing out of a speaker and one of them mimes along to the music. The other one has a badly written sign asking for money. Please don't give them any money.

By the time police laid criminal charges against Calgary contractor Alan Hrehirchuk, former employees and clients say he was taking weeks-long vacations, locking the doors to his office showroom to avoid angry tradespeople demanding payment, all while convincing new clients to hire him by showing them celebrity endorsements, including from the popular HGTV show The Property Brothers.

Hrehirchuk is due to make his first appearance in a Calgary courtroom Monday after charges were laid last month.

Since the announcement of charges on July 12, the Calgary Police Service says about a dozen new alleged victims of Hrehirchuk have come forward and the investigation continues. Police say further charges are possible.

I love these bags, hope they're successful. However, the federal government is being very hard headed.

Calgary’s tight rental market isn’t showing any signs of loosening up and the crunch is getting worse for those looking for pet-friendly housing. Cami Kepke has more on the lengths some are going to in difficult situations.

The two bedroom communities, located on the northwestern and southern edges of Calgary's city limits, have similar populations, household incomes and demographics.

But one area where they differ is the rate of new housing construction approved by the local municipal governments over the past decade or so.

I always wondered what the deal with was with the hardware store on 10th Street in the middle of Kensington.

Hillhurst Hardware has been in business at that same location since 1945 when Abraham Henry Sigler, just after the end of the Second World War, took out a $5,000 loan to buy what at that time was called the Piggly Wiggly grocery store.

I was at home and the whole family scrambled to help clear the bikes out of the way in the garage so we could bring the car we have on the driveway in. Got a bruise on my hand from one of the hail stones.

Have you managed to sort out a way to remain as connected to the city as you were before? If you are enjoying Lemmy/kbin, what stands out as something you would appreciate seeing more of in the Calgary community here?

I would be interested in getting more of a niche community going as I do really enjoy Lemmy overall and appreciate the somewhat slower pace as well. Curious if others feel a need for something like this and thoughts around it!
